Unriffable??
« on: October 21, 2006, 11:11:35 AM »
Seeing as we got a thread about animation being riffed on, and we all know from MST days that Catalina Caper was their one and only try at the comedy genre, with Rifftrax being able to do any and all types of genre, i set up this thread to ask the above question:

Which genre of movie do you think, would be the hardest to riff on?

Oh and by erotica, i mean stuff like Basic Instinct and Silver and ever movie Shannon Tweed as ever done, rather then pornography.

So lets discuss and vote and see what we get...
In brightest day, in darkest night
No DVD shall escape their sight
Let those who tremble in bad movies light,
Beware the power, Rifftrax's might!

I voted for erotica.  I think a rifftrax would be quite funny with movies like Basic Instinct or Body of Evidence, but Mike seems uncomfortable with those kinds of movies.  If he found the butt-scraping sex scene in Road House difficult, how would he handle the candle wax scene in Body of Evidence?  :)

definately Silent movies. the same would go for subtitled movies too

a good 80% or more of the riffs work off of what the characters say rather than what we see. A movie without dialogue wouldn't give the riffer enough ammo for his laugh-cannon. The other option would be to insert your own voice track into the movie (a la "Kung Pow" or "What's up, Tiger Lily?") which could also be funny.
I really do like pie.

I voted comedies, but it really depends on what type of comedy and when it was made.  I thought Catalina Caper was hilarious and I'd be willing to be other comedies from that decade would likely be totally riffable as well, but I'd say successful comedies from the past 20 years or so could be very difficult.

If you were to watch a comedy that you genuinely found funny, riffing around those jokes might create a paradox that would immediatly make you go insane.

I loved comedies as well.  And I agree with mrbakasan, Catalina Caper worked since it was a beach movie and the setting and time period lent itself to lots of opportunities for good riffs.

I voted for musicals as being the hardest to riff.  It seems that with all the singing, it would be hard to find the space to insert riffs.

I would definitely like to see Mike try to riff musicals such as Grease, Grease 2, Rent, or Phantom of The Opera, but he would probably have a hard time with them.

Not all comedies would be hard to riff, the unfunny ones would probably be easy pickings.  One example of a spectacularly unfunny comedy that would be ripe for a riffing, this summer's My Super Ex Girlfriend.  Completely unfunny turd that wastes some pretty major comic talent in unfunny supporting roles (Eddie Izzard, Rainn Wilson, and Anna Faris in particular).

I think musicals would be pretty easy.  It's usually just repetitive songs that take ten minuets to talk about one tiny subject, so it doesn't really matter if you riff over it.  Plus they are generally ridiculous, but at the same time they take themselves seriously.  Perfect for riffing.  There have also been many musical numbers in MST3K episodes that they have riffed over.

I voted for comedy, but I agree with the notion that a bad comedy could be a good Rifftrax.

The Music Man (the Buddy Hackett one) and Paint Your Wagon (Client Eastwood's musical debut) would both probably be hilarious.  Also, the new Phantom of the Opera would be funny too.  By the way, I actually really enjoy all of the movies I just listed, so I'm not saying they are riff worthy because I think they suck.

I voted erotica.  I dislike this sort of stuff myself.  Watching other people get it on just doesn't interest me at all.  Listening to someone try to riff on that would seem kinda of creepy to me, I think.

I'd say silent, unless they constructed their own story or something.

I think that anything is riffable, but I voted Silent because there isn't a "none of the above".

Remember, there's "comedy" as opposed to comedy.

People keep saying it's supposed to be a comedy, but everytime I've watched Catalina Caper it's never crossed my mind that the movie was meant to be funny. Maybe that's because of Mike and the bots, or maybe it's because the movie sucks - I'm not sure. But anyway, I voted comedy, because in my personal experience, a bad comedy is the only bad movie I can't find a way to enjoy on any level. Or in other words:

I voted comedy, but they're not exactly unriffable.  Just difficult to riff because they're supposed to be funny to begin with.

The only truly unriffable movies, in my opinion, would be ones that it'd be in bad taste to riff.  Like Shindler's List or Philidelphia or World Trade Center, etc. Not that I'd mind seeing these riffed, but I'm sure other people would object.  :D

I voted erotica for some of the reasons mentioned above plus the fact that two dudes making jokes about people getting it on in a movie seems a bit umm...creepy?  Creepy probably isn't strong enough.  ONE dude making jokes about it supposedly in a room all by himself is extra-creepy.  I think the Roadhouse scenes could have been handled in a way that I would have never been able to look/listen/think about mst3k or Mike Nelson again without throwing up a bit and getting an "ick" shiver.  Luckily, it was Mike Nelson and he seemed as offended as I did.

If you don't think musicals are riffable, see Grease 2.  Gods, I could riff that movie all day and I'm not a pro like these guys.  "Do It For Our Country," "Who's That Guy" . . . man, the possibilities.
