Last riffed movie: Super Mario Brothers
Last un-riffed movie: The Last Dinosaur on Warner Archive Instant (Enjoyably cheesy 70s "Lost World" dinosaur tv movie produced by Rankin-Bass)

I enjoyed the first Sin City when it came out but haven't been that tempted to see A Dame to Kill for yet, maybe when it gets to Blu-Ray. TBH, Frank Miller's generally unpleasant "racist uncle who makes Thanksgiving very uncomfortable" worldview makes me somewhat glad that it seems to have flopped pretty hard (8th place at the weekend box office); of course, if The Spirit (I still think it's the kind of complete train wreck of a movie that only a very talented person can make) and that "Kill all the Muslims" graphic novel that used to have Batman weren't career-enders, this probably won't be either.

Room 237

A great documentary about 5 people's different views on the meaning of The Shining (the movie, not the book).  They range from reasonable and insightful (It's about Americans wiping out the Indians, it is about the nature of history and sin) to ludicrous (evidence that Stanlet Kubrick faked the filming of the moon landing.  And this man believes that man landed on the moon, but the film of it was faked).  Still, the film doesn't pass judgment (except in some really subtle ways, in my opinion), allowing the people to state their cases about the meaning of the film and about the effect that it had on them.  Though it is about the Shining, you don't need to see it to get a lot out of it, as it is also about what people get out of film, artist intent (some of the people even state that their interpretation might not be Kubrick's intent but it is still valid), what people connect with or notice (or insist on noticing even though it is clearly wrong) and the experience of watching.  Definitely worth your time.

That looks interesting. Where did you get a copy? (I bet it's that Canadian Netflix that has way better stuff than US Netflix. *grumble*

It's streaming on US Netflix right now. And is indeed pretty good, no matter how bonkers most of the theories are (except for the one about the impossible architecture of the Overlook, because that one's probably true on some level).

Yeah, but the part about the Minotaur from the same person is SO wrong.  It's just a skiing poster.  There's no way you can convinced me that it looks anything like a minotaur.  Maybe a satyr (cling on to that one, guy who thinks it's all about sex).

It's too bad the film didn't get this guy, since I find he does a much better job of explaining things:

I took my cousin to see X-men, days of future past. That's the third time I went to see it. It's very hard for movies to get better with repeated viewings, but I think this is actually one of those very rare exceptions. I enjoyed it even more the third time.

That's good to hear.  Haven't had the chance to revisit that yet, but I kind of got that feeling from it already.

I'm a bit late to the conversation, but I really didn't like the first Sin City.  It looks pretty, but it's so hyper-stylized that I couldn't feel anything for the characters.  It's a hollow shell that actually made me realize that the source material was just as shallow.

While I did enjoy the first film, I have realized that the more I see of Frank Miller's comics the less I enjoy them.  Absolutely hate when he does anything Batman related, even though Dark Knight Returns seems to be some holy grail of comics to a lot of fans.

Yeah, I don't get that. I hated it. I read it and thought, "This can't be the one that people are always talking about, can it?"

The art is also not my thing at all. It looks like a Dick Tracy comic strip.

I haven't read it, but I downloaded it the other day to read, and was shocked at how silly the art was.

And that artwork is practically masterpiece level next to the sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Back.

Is that the one where Batman finds out that the Joker is his father?

I'M CONFUSED, PERHAPS MENTIONING YOU DIDN'T ENJOY SIN CITY ANOTHER 17 TIMES WOULD MAKE IT CLEAR YOU DIDN'T ENJOY IT AND POSSIBLY CHANGE THE ROTTEN TOMATOES RESULT SHOWING CRITICS CONSIDERED IT GREAT FILM.  ::)

They've moved on to Frank Miller's comics now.
