But can anyone tell me what the very end where she's old in bed in the room with aliens was a reference to?  It seems so familiar, but I can't quite remember.
Probably a reference to the end of 2001. The scene in MST3K when Dr. Forrester was getting old and then became a baby was a reference to that scene in 2001 as well.

Thanks. It was either 2001 or slaughter house five. Couldn't remember which.

Saw "The Worlds End".  A very strange but enjoyable film.  Probably my favorite of the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost films.

I don't know yet if I'd call it my favorite, but it ranks up there very closely with Shawn and Hot Fuzz for me.  I do think Gary and Andy are my favorite characters of Pegg and Frost though.

See, not having seen the special, I would have assumed it was a reference to Cocoon.

I expected to like it a lot more than I did, but I felt the same way about Hot Fuzz at first.  They're all just really different.

While I would definitely call Shaun and Fuzz funnier movies (and a bit more accessible), World's End is definitely the deepest/most mature of the three. Which makes it a bit jarring at first, especially when combined with Wright's energetic sensibilities and Pegg's natural charisma. Still, I fell head over heels in love with it after two viewings, so I can't complain much.

I had a Vegas double feature tonight: Casino followed by Ocean's Eleven (both two of my all-time favorites). The former is probably my favorite Scorsese picture, a perfectly epic rise/fall crime movie that goes to town with the gaudy colors, clothes, and swears of the strip back on the day. And the latter is one of the most confidently cool pictures of the past twenty years. Not to mention a script where pretty much every single line of dialogue makes me laugh.

I've now got the weirdest craving to play Dead Rising 2...

I read the Oz books as a kid and recently I watched that movie "Oz The Great and Powerful". I remembered certain portions of the movie as being from the book, and I co-related it with the Judy Garland movie... and I decided... wow... who gives a shit...

The first hour of the film I was ready to turn it off... as it was boring and silly and for little kids... but then I saw Mila Kunis, whom I have had a sexual lust for since "That Seventies Show" Oh good lord. Well, she appeared early in the film, but I didn't really fall in love with her (AGAIN) until she turned evil. When she got all green and threatened the Munchkins, I was totally on board!

The movie took off for me then... and that was the last thirty minutes or so. I also read "Wicked"... good wire work by the director...

Anyways...

What were we talking about?

LOVE!

Randy.

Captain Phillips.

Was really unimpressed for most of it, if it wasn't for Paul Greengrass I probably wouldn't have turned it off but I was sort of expecting that because I find Tom Hanks to be one of the blandest actors ever.  However

Stir of Echoes - Good but not great supernatural thriller.  Overall, I don't think it is all that great, but there are lots of great bits.  There's a nice bit at the beginning where the little boy who is clearly talking to a ghost does so by talking to the camera.  It sounds like it shouldn't work, but it is somehow more unsettling.  Still, there's a bit of sentimentality that doesn't work, a few character missteps and some generic horror movie stuff (although I think they did some of those surprise scares a little better through stronger editing.  It feels like they could have made it all a bit more unsettling, though.

Sir of Echoes. Hmmm... I do not like ghost stories, they do not impress me. Horror stories about demons or aliens, or axe wielding maniacs, are more impressive for me than ghosts. The dead have nothing to say to us, if they exist, and I do not believe that they do. As Issac Asimov said, "...I expect death will be nothingness..."

However, I did like Kevin Bacon's performance, and the direction was very good. But, I find ghost stories to be... not frightening... I'll yawn through a ghost story is what I'm sayin'.

There is great evil in the world among human beings with psychopothies and sociapathies that make things like ghosts a rather silly idea. Much like goblins. Or elves.

What were we talkin' about?

LOVE and kisses, (no tongue this time!)

RANDY!

Stir of Echos would have been a bigger deal, except Sixth Sense beat it to theaters. It's a shame too, because Stir of Echos is a better movie that holds up much stronger to repeat viewings.

But, the problem with the entire concept is, they are both ghost stories. See what I'm sayin'?

See, ghost stories are dumb. Also, silly.

I know you wanna think your grandma, or mama is looking down on you from heaven, but, she's not. There is no god there is no afterlife there is nothing but sweet, sweet death... oblivion...

Also Hitler is not burning in hell, he is just dead, a rotted piece of jaw bone. There is no judgement after we die. Only morons believe that. And, only morons believe that, THAT is the reason we should act like civilized primates. We should act like civilized primates because it may allow us to live on this world a little bit longer. Not because some book says so, or some amorphous god tells us to.

Anyways, the whole concept gets my Irish up!

LOVE

The (not) Reverend Randy.

PS: What you saw before you were born, is the same as you will see after you die. Think about it.

Randy, if you don't like ghost movies, fine. But the rest of that belongs in the religion thread.

I'm working on a deadline and I am punchy. I'm not as good a writer as Imrahil, or gbeenie, or LadyKenobi, or PAKman, or Tyrant, or Sideswipe, so I'm a little stressed....

Although, I must say, Imrahil, you are certainly light-years smarter than I, but, I thought my nasty post, (which was WAAAAY too heavy) was fairly coherent...

What? It wasn't?

I mean, it was bleak, but I'm a bleak person. Sometimes. And, frankly, I'm writing a very bleak article, that could be it...

May all of the gods above and below, that may exist, hold you in the crook of their palm, keeping you and yours safe and warm, forever and ever, AMEN!

Rev. Randy.
