Shortbus

Never heard of this movie, but I saw it was by John Cameron Mitchell and Warning!  Explicit Sex on the cover and thought I had to get it.

Really good movie.  But I wasn't expecting sex that explicit.  One of the opening scenes has a character giving himself fallatio.  Yeah, it's pretty explicit.

But getting into the movie, it's not really about sex.  It's about relationships.  The female lead is a sex counseler who has never had an orgasm.  Then she is invited to shortbus, an underground sex club.  Called shortbus because it is filled with the "challenged and gifted"

Also really enjoy the soundtrack.  Expecially the song at the end.

A fine evening's viewing yesterday -

Me, You and Everyone We Know - A (very) quirky romantic comedy about a performance artist who takes a shine to a shoe salesman who's recently divorced and struggling to be a single dad.  There's also a number of subplots involving their relatives, co-workers, and people they meet briefly who all intertwine in some way.  It's at times a little too whimsical, but otherwise the film's quite lovely, with some very funny moments and a fine performance from the lead actress, writer and director, Miranda July.

Abel
- A Dutch surrealist comedy from the 80s, Abel concerns a 30 year old shut-in who is kicked out of the family home when his stern father discovers he has secretly bought a television.  The man walks the streets and finds himself in the home (and arms) of a stripper who happens to be having an affair with his father.  Its look is somewhere between Lynch and Gilliam, done as a romantic comedy.  It's funny, quite sexy, and really rather excellent.

Return of Dracula
- Released a year before Hammer rebooted Dracula with Christopher Lee, this is a sadly forgotten rendition of the character.  Plotwise, it's basically Shadow of a Doubt, but with Dracula terrorizing the American suburbs, and it works really well.  Good characterizations and performances too, despite the obvious lack of budget.

APGIL and I liked this movie a lot as well. John Cameron Mitchell is fantastic.

I want to see Shortbus, not (just) because it has real sex scenes in it.

I always figured movies just used that as a gimmick.

You do know you can see that elsewhere on the internet, right?  It's an interesting movie though.

Tower Heist

Well, it's a heist movie.... But it's not particularly funny or memorable. There is one decent scene with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy... but overall, it's a lazy script, doing nothing for the genre. I guess you could find worse ways to spend your time.... Tea Leone, Alan Alda and Matthew Broderick give decent enough supporting performances. If you watch it while you are folding laundry you probably won't be terribly disappointed.

Les Miserables

AMAZING! The only thing I thought was lacking was Russell Crowe. I am in love with Marius <3

I'd rather watch the 1925 non musical version... when did this story become a musical anyway

1980. So it's too late for you to do anything about it now, I guess.

That version is fantastic, everyone should see it, I still love the musical however.

EDIT: Wait, no, I'm thinking of the one from '34, not seen the silent from '29.

It was a goofy film, but still pretty fun. Michael Shannon's bad guy was wonderfully crazed, and there was some solid bike stunts.

Here are some more brief reviews of films I have watched recently:

Konga - Ridiculous British monster movie about a scientist who comes from hanging out with a tribe in South America with a chimpanzee, a serum that can make things grow, and a very silly case of megalomania.  Scientist soon gets growing chimp to kill off anyone who gets in his way.  The sort of film that MST3k would've certainly riffed on given enough time.

Sacred Flesh
- Initially interested by the fact that the short film this was based on was banned in the UK for blasphemy, I was let down pretty quickly by the fact that the film turned out to a badly made softcore porn film, intercut with some mundane debates between a nun and Mary Magdalene about chastity.  Amazingly, worse than Konga.

Hot Enough for June - This may sound like a porn film, but it's actually a fairly decent spy spoof from the 60s starring Dirk Bogarde.  He plays a man who believes he is going to Czechoslovakia for his new mundane managerial job, but is actually working for the British goverment in a bit of espionage.  He meets a super hot communist girl, and they both betray their own governments to be with each other.  It's a light, not too taxing film with some nice performances from the supporting cast.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre - I did not like it. :( I didn't like how Humphrey Bogart ended up
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, I liked some aspects of it...but ultimately it was a film that left me with an empty feeling.
