Full Metal Jacket

Picked it up cheap on Blu-Ray.  I've never watched this all in one sitting before, and had only seen about 75% of it.  Kind of pointless overall, I guess that was the feeling Kubrick was going for, like the war itself?  Forgot Vincent D'Onofrio played the doofus turned nutjob recruit, could certainly see bits of detective Goren in that performance.

Finally got to watch Iron Sky. I have to say, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Aside from it's inherant silly premis, and a few jokes that do work, it feels rather...lifeless.
A lot of that is because of my aversion to movies where there are no characters you like or can even really root for. The only one is James Washington, and while he is "the hero" of sorts, the movie doesn't spend all it's time with him.
We spend too much time with the various Nazis, a major plotline being their inner rank struggle. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT!
Hell, I didn't even care for the female Nazi we are supposed to sympathize with. Mainly because her turn to good is way too quick for someone indoctrinated in Nazi propoganda since birth. That, and we're supposed to like her because she's hot. :P Yes, she is, but that's not reason enough. Heck, the Republican advisor had an absolutely mesmerizing rack, but I still hated her.
And don't get me started on the Palin president and other Republican characters. Such blunt force trauma messaging. Yet still oddly toothless since it's telling us stuff that even someone who already hates them like myself thinks is going too over the top.
The big space battle we are promised is over too quickly.
Oh, and for some reason the best part of the trailers, the KICKASS song in the second trailer (starts at 1:15) was not in the score. The hell?!

Well, if nothing else... at least I browsed through the Iron Sky cast on IMDB looking for mesmerizing racks...

X-Men: First Class

It certainly has some flaws (why did all the mutant women need to be played by bad actors?  Was that a conscious choice?  Also, Mystique is less weird looking as a blue monster.  Also some weak dialogue from time to time), but overall its a real return to form for the movie.  It had some great action set pieces, a big sense of scale and I love Kevin Bacon's first appearance a lot.  Plus, there are some amazing moments in direction, particularly the sister scenes involving the movement of a coin.  Really looking forward to the next one.  Still, I hope that it'll be a return to form for Singer or I might start missing Vaughn (he did a good job).

The Amazing Spider-Man

I'm a lifelong Rami fan but I like this more than his first take on the character (if the sequel can live up to the (imo) brilliant Spider-Man 2 is still to be seen) anyone who dismisses Peter as 'whiny. has apparently never seen a coming of age movie before since that is clearly what this is, a fun & well-crafted action movie.

I tend to call him a whiner in this one because he does a whole lot of extra whining (compared to most coming-of-age films, usually starring characters far less "cool" than he is in this movie), which at one point actually leads to the death of a major character. Also, his final line of the film quite literally tore a gaping new hole in the character.

Yeah, not really a fan of this one.

Moonrise Kingdom - Pretty good, but not my favorite Wes Anderson movie.

The Elephant Man - Probably the most mainstream thing David Lynch has done (next to Dune). I loved it. For the most part, it doesn't feel like a Lynch movie but at the same time it does, just more toned down. A lot of things in it actually reminded me of his first film, Eraserhead.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Wow it looks great on Blu-Ray on a big screen.  So well done and so much fun to sit down and soak it all in.

Not sure if it was a new sound mix for the Blu-Ray or just the higher quality, but I was noticing the music more in places I don't remember noticing it before.

Just watched Coraline for the first time. Loved it. I love it when animation tries to simulate a sort of dream-like state, and I felt like Coraline did that very well. It also got genuinely creepy, which I didn't expect going in.

I'm a sucker for that type of animation.

It's great in 3D, they changed the depth of the scenes between the real world and the dream world so it adds and extra layer of creepiness.  I had the anaglyph version before getting a 3D system, while the new full color 3D is awesome, this is one movie I think using the colored glasses adds something extra.

The Raid: Redemption

A group of police officers execute a raid on a building full of criminals. A series of violent confrontations follow.

Seriously though, there's no story here, but it's a pretty good straight-up action movie.

By the way, I hate it when discs default to English subtitles. I starting watching this thing, and I was like "You have got to be fucking kidding me." For chrissakes, the dubbing quality was on the level of Prince of Space!

My daughters are fine watching stuff like Jaws and LOTR, but they are majorly freaked out by Coraline.

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

My wife had never seen this, and was apparently under the impression that I hadn't either.. .So she borrowed it from a co-worker over the weekend... I dunno, I just don't share the hatred for this one that many do. It's easily the runt of the Indy litter... but I didn't find it terrible. The final half hour of the movie was pretty bad, but beyond that it was fun enough. I was never really annoyed by LeBouf and thought old man Ford actually looked interested in the role. Script should have been better, and some of the CGI 'stunts' slapped you in the face like a wet fish... but I thought it largely held onto that same over-the-top sense of adventure that made the series famous. Three outta five stars.

Days of Heaven. It's a well made film, but I like Terrence Malick's film Badlands more.
