Bucky Larson Born To Be A Star

A premise in search of jokes.  About the only thing in it worth mentioning is a pretty funny Kevin Nealon in a small role.  And Christina Ricci is cute as she usually is, but she is certainly slumming in this.  The rest is dreadful.

Phantasm III - For those unfamiliar with the Phantasm series, it's the one with the floating metal ball that impales people in the face and a old dude stealing dead bodies for some mysterious use on another plane of existence.  This one's not very good and makes little sense - it counts on explaining things in its sequel, which is kinda shameful unless one is imminent.

Phantasm IV - Which came 4 years later.  It looks like this one was made with absolutely no budget, but is actually much better than the third, and possibly even better than the first.  The fact that the film is comprised of the cast that appeared in the first one, which was made almost 20 years prior, lends an odd poignancy to the film, especially when the director uses footage from the first 2 as the main character laments over the loss of his idyllic childhood.  It still doesn't explain much and again leaves everything open for a sequel (which hasn't arrived, and probably won't now, after 14 years) which smacks of the director not knowing what's going on in his own series.

I LOVE Phantasm and the only sequel I didn't like was #2.  I like the way the rest of them used the same actors to play Michael and Reggie and despite scripting problems #4 was visually the most beautiful of the series, IMHO.

I wish a fifth would happen and focus on the other world/dimensionality where the Tall Man and his evil metal spheres came from.

4 is nice looking, especially the dreamy ways it flashes back to it the first and second movies.  Your last sentence is kinda my main problem with Phantasm: barely anything is explained and when it is, it makes barely any sense.

We Need To Talk About Kevin.

Interesting editing. But never have I seen a better titled film.  So very little dialogue or explanation.

Maybe that was the point.

Definately the least fun 'Home Alone' movie so far though

This puzzles me  - I have seen the Home Alone movies and I don't get the connection...

Can't everybody just be quiet during a movie?!  I guess not. [...]

But the biggest reason wasn't the couple, though they had a lot to do with it.  The big reason was that the movie was dull as all hell.

The least they could do is be funny ;)

I'm on a B movie roll!  Weeee!!

Evil Brain From Outer Space

So, I've heard of the classic Japenese character Starman.  Never seen it though.

I thought this movie was great fun and am going to try to find any others available.  Its basically a Jananese Superman.  Dude made of steel comes from a distant planet to save earth.  In this one a brilliant, yet evil, man dies, but they manage to save his brain.  The evil brain comes to earth, picking up human recruits.  The brain releases mutants and horrible diseases that will eventually wipe out the human race and conquer the earth *insert evil laugh here*

My fave character was the vapor monster.  Or as I called it Mr. Jazz Hands.  Whoever was in this costume was quite a dancer, and the fight scenes were hilarious.  It was like Pitch from Santa Claus time three.

Also saw some movie called We Bought a Zoo with some little known actor named Matt Damon.  It was good.

Piranha 3DD. Irritatingly bad, an a massive let-down from the first one. While that movie was actually a pretty good movie wrapped up with some outstanding gore effects, this one just felt really cheap and lazy. The acting was embarrassing, the flow was really awkward (stupid situation morphed into another stupid situation with no real thought between them), a lot of the jokes misfired, and the whole thing felt like some weird self-parody, which simply doesn't work at all. Things do pick up for the climax, especially once David Hasselhoff shows up (and Ving Rhames for... some reason), but for every gore bit or dark-humored joke that hits, another one still misfires. Ultimately it all is one you'll be laughing at a lot more than you'll be laughing with, and that fact that it's still kinda dull for a movie that's barely over 70 minutes (plus an extra 10 of "outtakes") does it no favors at all. It's certainly not outlandishly terrible (because for real, some stuff does actually hit the mark), it's just botched in a cheap and lazy fashion. Skip it and stick to the first one, that one's a good old gonzo masterpiece.

That's a shame, although not entirely surprising. There's just something special about the first one; it all kinda came together. Always try to go out on a high note...and by "high note," I mean harbor massacre.

Indeed. Technically, the sequel has the proper amount of nudity and craziness, it just has neither the talent or the skill to actually engage you with it. It's all just sort of there. FilmSchoolRejects put it best in their review: "When a piranha leaps out of a character’s vagina and bites another character’s, um, man parts and the best emotion it inspires is a casual shrug, you know things aren’t going well."

It's been so long I forgot his name had been Kevin.  And I'd always thought his family didn't like him, not the other way around - or to put it more speifically, his family sort of just tended to forget he existed.

His family was pretty insufferable, but so was he some of the time. It was a mutual hatred.

I have no idea how someone can say "vagina" but then get all bashful about saying "penis". But whatever.

I'm glad you posted your thoughts, RD. We liked the first movie but were on the fence about the second. We'll just bypass it altogether, I think.
