I bought a bunch of used horror movies, looking for some classics. Found 2 that were not good, but had good ideas.
First was Lucio Fulci's House of Clocks. Basically, some thieves break into a mansion run by 2 sweet old folks. Thing get out of hand and the old couple end up dying (and their caretaker). The theives decide to spend the night after accidentally killing those people, but suddenly all the clocks in the mansion start turning backwards and the old people are healed and start killing off the thieves. There are some really cool ideas in this otherwise weak gore flick. The idea that a shotgun blast reversing through time (or repeating, it wasn't 100 percent clear) to kill the guy who originally fired it was cool, but it doesn't really live up to the premise and ends on an MST3k-level note of incompetence where there's a hilariously dumb twist ending after flashing back to every major event in the movie for no good reason. Let's just say it's the perfect set up for a Tounces joke. Still, for the premise alone, this is a film that I would like to see remade.
The other one was a British psychological horror film called Afraid of the Dark. The twist is pretty obvious from early on, but one thing I liked is that it seems to expect you to realize the twist as it slowly becomes more obvious. I had the secret pegged from the beginning, but it is able to overcome that by it really being more about the main character than any big shocks. That said, it is not to engaging and while there are moments I really liked in it, it felt a little flat.
