I hate that man more than anybody else on the planet. His stupid, smug face just BEGS to be smashed with a pool cue.
Saw Chronicle tonight. Man. Oh. Freakin' man. Did I enjoy that! It's like putting "Primer" and "Akira" in a blender. There's no movie from 2011 that I saw that I enjoyed more than "Chronicle" ("Drive" comes closest). I'm a sucker for when a small DIY kinda movie gets most everything right and just overall ingenuity (and there's tons of that here). So I'm a bit predisposed and can't recommend for everyone. But I recommend it for most. ;) I'll be very interested to see how much I like it a 2nd time.

The Akira comparison is one I definitely get (and considering the rightful amount of development hell the real Live Action Akira is going through, this will hopefully be the best we get in that regard), but I don't think I see the Primer angle.
Really? I thought it was the exact same plot as "Primer" (that's a compliment imo): A small group of youngish guys accidentally discover a mysterious power far greater than they at first realize. They start with small experiments and work their way toward big experiments that starts to show how dangerous the power they've discovered is
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, too much usage of the power causes a facial orifice to bleed.

TL;DR Replace "telekinesis" with "time travel".

I guess I see it, but then, I don't really see that sort of plot as something that's exclusive to Primer (and I'm on your side regarding that movie, too).

Puss in Boots.

Disappointed really.  I love Puss in the Shrek movie, looked forward to this.  Not very good.

But now I'm taking people's advice on here and getting TinTin.  Never really cared to see it, but ya'll make it sound good.

I'm off to see The Hunger Games.  I hear the first trailer for Breaking Dawn 2 will be shown before the movie.

I generally avoid major media outlets (top 40 radio, tv, magazines), but I'm being fucking bludgeoned to death on the ones I do see (web, NPR) about the fucking hunger games.  Shut the fuck up about the hunger games, world.

Edit: This isn't specifically directed at you, Nerdess, but is rather a generally annoyed comment directed at the people at NPR, who have featured at least two stories on it in the last day and have it as the topic of their call-in show this morning.

Apparently it did $20M in midnight showings, seventh best of all-time. This thing is gonna be pretty huge. Maybe not Twilight or Potter huge, but definitely a phenomenon.

That's what it seems to be. Although it also seems to be an actually good movie, which is a major plus these days when it comes to phenomenons.

Im, I know you're not interested, but the books are actually pretty decent for what they are.  Much better than Twilight, which it's unfairly compared to.

Anyway, I saw two foreign films recently:

Band Baaja Baaraat is an Indian romantic comedy about two friends (the man a lazy slob, the woman an uptight know-it-all) forming a wedding planning business together.  Things go swimmingly until they have sex with one another.  One is love, while the other is terrified of commitment.  Yeah, totally generic, yet delivered with the typical onslaught of colour and music that makes me really enjoy Bollywood films.

Mostly Martha is a German comedy, remade with Catherine Zeta Jones a few years later.  Martha is a chef who is incredibly particular about everything, but her life is thrown into chaos when her sister dies in a car crash, leading her to take care of her young niece.  Really nice film, underplayed but still funny, totally at odds with the way Hollywood does their comedies.

Well, I plan to see a film in the next few days, either John Carter or The Hunger Games and I think my mind just got made up for me.

But the last film I saw? Dragonball Evolution, with Team 4 star's riff.

Meh.

Look, I'm not a fan of the cartoon, so the various liberties taken with the Dragonball cast's "rich and awesome personalities" doesn't bother me in the least, so to me the film was just a rather forgettable action film with moments of "Is that Chow Yun Fat?" in it. The iriff? Meh. It may appeal to fans of the team but for me, a non fan, it was rather disappointing. Too blue for my tastes and way too many "Argh. This film sucks!" moments in the riff.  Top notch presentation though with no audio problems at all.

I saw the Hunger Games. It wan't bad, but they got the tone wrong. They couldn't decide if they wanted it to be dark and gritty, or a satire. It kind of seemed like it was directed by two different people. I do think they did a pretty good job with the script adaptation; it flowed good. Summed up in GIF format:

The Muppets

I mostly loved this movie, although there were a few cringe-worthy moments in the film.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nothing too offensive though to ruin the overall film.

There were a few pointless celebrity cameos and one or two that were spot on.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The main problem I had with the movie were the main human characters played by Jason Segel and Amy Adams.  They really served no purpose in the film and were just sort of there.  But overall a small issue with an otherwise great movie.

I am a bit curious about Hunger Games but from what I have heard about it, how is it not derivative of Battle Royale?  Teens having to hunt and kill each other for some sort of TV event.

Plus you know the mandated PG-13 rating to get bigger box office will defang this from what it should be given it's premise.

Will probably Redbox it in 4 months, just to check it out.

I think some of Team Fourstar's stuff is really good (not all of it), but the preview for that riff looked way below their normal level of quality. I heard somebody else did a riff of the movie that was pretty well-received, though...

I should probably say that my qualms about it stem from the fact that I read the book. My friend didn't read them and loved it. My above comment probably comes across harsher than it should have. Total sidebar, whoever does their green screen compositing it not very good.
