Your co-workers aren't into Gladiator movies, are they?

If they are, I think you've lost this argument before you've started.

It's a good movie. Even a DARN good movie. The BEST movie, though? EVER? I'll defend it as a work of art, but we all know Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the BEST movie ever. :^)

Well, I freaking LOVED the 300!  I have waxed on and on about what a great "man's" movie this is.  And from a military standpoint, Sarc, you can see what I am talking about.  It is crazy over-the-top silly men killing lots of other men-- just cause that's what men do.

More importantly, they are doing it to really defend something.  The hell with you if you don't get that!  You freakin hippie!  (Not you, Sarc, the other poonomies...)

THIS... IS... SPARTA!!!!!

Because Faramir is the worst play-by-play guy in history!  You gotta get (tries to think of American commentators)...erm, John Madden there, with his circles and pointy arrows.

Gerard Butler's accent? The first third is not particularly thrilling? Some of those abs. look like they were put there by a finger-painting eight-year old? The irritating, sub-Alec Guiness voiceover? The goat!? I've warmed to the film somewhat but I don't consider it the best film ever by any means. Certainly not the worst though.

Actually, you know what I really enjoyed about this film? Theron's death. He double-crosses Gorgo, there's some bitching and then she stabs him. Any other film would have waited a good hour or so before he finally gets his come-uppance, during which we're expected to care about Gorgo's plight while the villain plots and schemes a little more. Nope, none of that silliness here. I liked that bit.

Despite the mythologization, (my word) of the graphic novel and subesquent re-telling of the story by countless cultures throughout Europe, the fact is that King Leonidas of the Spartans took 300 men to Thermopolea and kicked Xerxes' ass.  If he hadn't, our own culture would have been horribly different.

That's something important to consider when dismissing this "fable".

Go ahead and make fun, but we could all be worshipping goat-gods right now, if the Spartans hadn't stood up like men.  Although, I do actually worhsip goat-gods.... that's not important to my treatise.

Carry on....

The mythology that the movie attempted to create was idiotic ... the 'good bones' baby doctor, the pig faced wise men, the slow motion teenage wise wenches. Then there was the narrator which explained all of these idiotic mythologies but what the movie doesn't realize is that the narrators longwinded speeches had an opposite disconnecting effect. The fight scenes were okay, but much of the battle plot feel uninspired and borderline cliche' (the son getting killed while his father and the audience look on yelling 'nooooooo'...  the TWO traitor plots... (spoilers are assumed at this point) but perhaps the stupidest thing about this whole movie is that "the 300" are a bunch of wimps when faced with their impending doom, and decide to flee

No they don't, all the ones that are still alive form that big shielded ball thing in the final showdown, the only Spartan that "flees" is the narrator...

...our own culture would have been horribly different.

That doesn't automatically make this the "best movie ever" otherwise '300 Spartans' would be just as good, not to mention all the other movies based on important historical battles and whatnot...

I couldn't actually figure that bit out. Right before the final battle the narrator tells us that "hundreds leave" then moments later tells us that Leonidas had "300 at his back". Who left? Just the Arcadians/Greeks?

Read "The Histories" by Herodutus if you want more and accurate info on the story.  Yes, the Arcadians and Thespians and other Greeks fled.  Greece was a tiny, conglomerated system of little city-states at the time, of which Sparta was just a part.  But, they were widely celebrated as the most fierce and brutal warriors in the world.

Then Rome came around...

for the record randy this movie IS what testosterone should be about i get that, and i venerate it, but man its corny.  Ill admit we need more movies like this.  good versus evil and a valiant struggle with bad ass action sequences.  but that does not come close to the greatest movie ever.  thats all im saying.

Well, I hated (HATED, I say) this film! I found it ugly to watch...ugly to listen to...just fugly all around. And I don't understand a film featuring a bunch of greased-up, shaven, half naked men is considered a man's movie!

But then again, I'm not really into profession wrestling either.

The movie had some goofy stuff (the lobster fin men), but it was a very good and exciting movie to me.

And the fact that people say they live in "spartan" conditions instead of "Arcadian" conditions tells you all you need to know about Sparta.

Yes.  All the Spartans save one stay, the rest of the Greeks leave.  Lousy Arcadians, scared of death, want to get back to their damn video games.
