A mistaken joke in Rifftrax?
« on: August 29, 2007, 11:37:14 AM »
During the scene where the Arcadians suggest retreating after hearing that the Persians have found the goat path, Leonidas says "Spartans never retreat.  Spartans never surrender..."  The riff for that line was "We dig Springsteen, man!"

I don't understand the riff.  Can anyone explain the joke to me?  If the line had been "We dig Corey Hart, man!" I would have understood but I don't see the connection between "never surrender" and Bruce Springsteen.  Is this a mistake by the Rifftrax team or is there something I'm missing?

Thank you...

"No surrender" is a song on Born in the USA.  The chorus is:

Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Ah, that makes sense.  Thank you...

I guess I'm just too Canadian!  Did Never Surrender not make it down to the US?

No, it made it down here. (In fact I think my high school used "Never Surrender" as a theme for a school dance one time.) It's just that Bruce's song is much more energetic than Corey's. And aside from "Sunglasses", Hart never did too well down here on the charts. Plus Bruce didn't keep staring into the camera during the music video of his song...

That video's 20 years old and that still bugs the hell out of me.
