This books has a great essay on Tristram Shandy

It's a compilation of two books I own; Is Heathcliff a Murderer and Can Jane Eyre be Happy? as well as one I've not got (and was thrilled to find existed :)) Who betrays Elizabeth Bennet? :

In light of a recent story and because there are "What are you fill in the blank" thereads on other sub boards I thought it might be good to have a What are you reading at the moment thread.

I'm currently (re)reading a book that smells mildly of cat urine and cigar smoke. It's called "The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide". Actually, I'm switching back and forth between that, "A Brief History of Time" and Nancy Reagan's autobiography.

Tristram Shandy.

Okay, I'm kidding, I couldn't get through to the end.  The over-bearingly smarmy text was just too much after the 300th page :)

I thoroughly enjoyed Tristram Shandy. Might be my favorite first name now. Good thing I don't have kids.

I thought the movie was decent, considering what it had to work with.

"Tristram" just says' bully bait to me.

That could be because the only Tristram, aside from Shandy, I know is the nerdy little kid from George and Mildred

Oh, no doubt. I'd never actually name my own kid Tristram. My wife's family is full of Gretchens and Gustavs and other highly german names despite the family having been here for ~200 years. Those kids had rough times at grade school.

I learned that the Romans were bastards who would surround a besieged town with small. disguised pits lined with sharpened sticks so that if the besieged army charged out they'd all impale themselves.

Currently I'm re-reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I usually go back to this whenever I've been reading or doing something heavy and need to unwind my brain. Most recently, the brain tangler was a new coding project I was responsible for at work. I just can't focus my brain on any "thoughtful" reading when I've been coding non-stop for 3 weeks. ;)

Which book are you reading then?

I just finished Going Postal a few days ago,  and right now am about halfway through Monstrous Regiment.

My personal favourite of all time is Interesting Times.

I'm getting through Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes.  Not as fun and crazy as Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but still good.

I love Tristram Shandy.   It's one of my fave "classics."  It just has that kind subtle/underhanded? humor in it that I find myself snickering too.  I didn't know there was a movie.

Right now I'm reading Virus X: Tracking the New Killer Plagues for light reading, heh, and also re-reading Silent Spring since I quote it quite a bit in a paper I'm presenting in September.
