Joy to the World is a great Christmas carol that never specifies Christ at all. In fact it could be a pagan messiah if you listen to the lyrics...

Could be about Baal or Adonis as much as it's about Christ.

I think the idea there is that no one but a total heathen would think that anyone but Christ was King.  So actually the song is a clever way to learn who the enemy is.  Just ask them and if they don't know, they should be burnt at the stake.

Like the ablity to rattle off the Ten Commandments from memory would help you if you were accused of being a witch in Old Salem.   ::)

They had something similar in Elizabethan London for those tried for murder. I can't remember the verse right now but people would memorize it to show they were educated i.e. could read, (note that people memorized it :)) and thus escape the gallows. Ben Jonson averted execution in that way.

And then there's the ever popular "Make a sentence out of the words 'hunter', 'field' and 'hare'..."  (see Judgement of Nurenburg).

Yes, poor Judy Garland.

Well, yeah.  She was the one who was accused of bumping uglies with the Jewish man.

But it was Montgomery Clift who couldn't (?) make a sentence.

You're right it's been a while since I saw the film. I love how the defense tries to retry the victims as if that makes the policies ok. Excellent film.

They were showing it quite a lot here a few months ago - around the time of the anniversary of the Holocaust.

And isn't the method of every freaking defense lawyer to try to try the victim?
