Generally speaking, I find fan fiction to be fairly scary - some of the stuff people get up to in their dirty little minds is way worse than anything the authors themselves spew out (with the possible exception of Anne Rice's alter ego).

I have, however, participated in some interesting quasi-fan fiction on a gaming forum - though technically, it was more like role playing, since it was a forum community for a game that was in development. There were about 10 of us, and we were essentially writing a novel together from each of our character's perspective.

We were somewhere above 1,000 posts in the thread when the company developing the game went under and shut everything down - tragic.

That sounds pretty fun. Maybe our next project should be to write a bad movie in the same manner.

Holy crap.

I'm pretty sure this is the thread that inspired me to start the Roundtable Riff Project, which in turn inspired Riff Raff Theater.

The things we lose track of.

Yeah, I've read some fan fiction (much of it in MSTed form).  I've even written a small amount (I've only  ever done it once, I swear - and I MSTed the result soon afterward).  Good fanfics are EXTREMELY rare, but believe it or not, I've actually read a couple of pieces that don't suck. This Elder Scrolls fanfic is an example.

Still, 90% of all fanfiction is crap - including the other 10 percent.  The very worst examples are absolutely unbearable (though this is sometimes mitigated by unintentional hilarity).  The worst examples I've ever encountered are The Eye of Argon by Jim Theis (which is dreadful) and The Rangers of NIMH (which is unquestionably the worst THING I have ever read, seen, or otherwise encountered).  (Both of the links are to the MSTed versions - if you viewed them unmocked, you would die).
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Sorry, it's just irritating when some control freak snitch comes into a new thread with a "you didn't doublecheck every single post on the 25 pages of this forum before you dared create this post" blast.  But this worked out so it's all good. :P

I hear yah.

Usually these are the same people that get on your back for the CAP sin of "thread necromancy" whenever you post on a topic from the second page.

Eye of Argon isn't a fanfiction.  Not that it makes it any better.

Ah, but The Eye of Argon Webcomic Project is. (Don't bother clicking the link. They haven't done anything since I checked there six months ago and they hadn't started drawing it then. Sigh.)

I think that the best kinds of fanfiction can reach into the Platonic Ideal of the show, while still bringing a quirky original flare and poking some fun at the sillier aspects of the source material.

I hereby present perhaps the FIRST Rifftrax Fan Fiction:

Michael Nelson was sitting alone in his riffing booth.  "Sigh," he sighed.  "I miss Kevin and Bill."
~You've got me~ intoned his disembodied friend and voice synchronizing software, Disembaudio.
"It's not the same," the mid-westerner replied.  "Since Rifftrax Presents..." He tailed off.
If Disembaudio had a head, he would would've nodded sadly in understanding.  Since the launch of Rifftrax presents, Kevin and Bill were recording together, without their pal, Mike.  ~They'll be back.  We have the weather.~
Mike's chubby little face lit up in anticipation.  "Of course!" He exclaimed brightly.  "I just have to tough it out till the winter!"
If Disembaudio had hands, he would've patted his lonely, but hopeful, friend on the back.

THE END.

Now something for all you slash fan fiction fans!

The only thing missing is you writing yourself into the story to be the hero.

Plus it's in the third person, some of the really wretched stuff is made all the worse for being written in the first person.
