Drew Carey to host "The Price Is Right"!

'Price is Right' for Drew Carey

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday to replace silver-haired legend Bob Barker on the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right." The deal was set Monday afternoon shortly before a taping of CBS' "Late Show" with David Letterman, where he confirmed it.

"I realize what a big responsibility this is," he said. "It's only a game show, but it's the longest-running game show in American television and I plan to keep it that way."

The selection attracted more attention than usual for a daytime show because of the prospect of replacing Barker, 83. Barker retired after 35 years in the job last month following taping of his 6,586th episode.

Carey, 49, spent a decade on his own ABC sitcom and also was host of the improvisational game show "Whose Line is It Anyway?"

He will also be host of a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will air first next month. He told The Associated Press on Monday that CBS officials first contacted him about "The Price is Right" immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.

"My agent called me and said `I was talking to CBS casting today' and in my head I was thinking, `Oh, `CSI' guest star?' And he said what would you think about replacing Bob Barker on `The Price is Right?'"

Asked if he found the prospect of replacing such a TV legend daunting, Carey recalled talking to a friend who knows the game show business who told him, "as long as Bob Barker is cool with it, the fans will be cool with it."

"I'm cool with it," Barker said after hearing Carey's remarks.

Barker said he's not familiar enough with Carey's past performances to offer an opinion on his selection. But, he said, "I understand he ad-libs very well and that he has a very nice, friendly way of working, and I think both of those would be helpful to him on`The Price Is Right.'"

His advice for Carey: "Go out there and do that show the way you think it should be done. Don't imitate me and don't imitate anyone else."

While Carey said doesn't know Barker personally, the younger comedian said he was comfortable that his predecessor would be accepting when he took on the job.

The negotiation process was nerve-racking. While he was talking with CBS about the job, Carey said he got a call from another lawyer in Hollywood who told him one of his clients was offered "The Price is Right" job.

He figured CBS had lined up back-ups if the first choice did not come through.

"If I was going after a second baseman, I wouldn't just talk to one second baseman," the Cleveland Indians fan said. "If I were the general manager, I would be talking to a few second basemen."

Interesting choice. Probably one of the best choices, come to think about it. I've always been a fan of his, so I'm sure he'll bring something new and enjoyable to the show ... a show which I haven't watched in like, 5 years.

Bob Barker IS the Price is Right. There's something about the thought of replacing him with ANYONE that just seems to degrade the whole thing to "Just another gameshow." Know what I mean?

Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday

I'm not sure "genial" is the right word for Drew Carey.  When he was up and coming, his stand-up was pretty dirty.  But I guess most people don't know him for that, and his TV work has always been pretty clean.

This is one of those things that could go either way.  It could get cancelled in 6 months, or he might turn it into something great.  Nobody thought The Daily Show would do well once Craig Kilborn left and Jon Stewart took over.  But it took off.

Carey's as good a choice as any I could come up with.  He's non-threatening to the older crowd that make up the bulk of the Price is Right audience, but his sitcom was recent enough that he'll help draw in a younger demo.  And asking for Barker's blessing was, I think, a smart move that will go a long way with fans.

The question I have is whether Carey's going to host the show with the sort of seriousness Barker had, or whether he's going to try a more irreverent approach.  One thing Bob never did was make light of the inherent dopeyness of Plinko, or belittle the goofy-ass contestants.  If Carey tries that sort of thing, I think he'll bomb hugely.

Drew Carey has to be in it for the long haul, though. I want him to be as old as Barker when he gives up PiR and I see him as having too much potential work  to stay on board...

I, on the other hand would say exactly what I think of it.....it's the most unfair game they have in the show.  Once in a blue moon someone hits the $10,000.  If you go for the $10,000 more often than not you get $0.  But if you try to play smart the other amounts are so pitiful that you come away with a thousand or $1,500, maybe.  And yet, people get so freaking excited about the game!  I don't get it.

Nobody thought The Daily Show would do well once Craig Kilborn left and Jon Stewart took over.  But it took off.

And no one thought The Late, Late Show would survive his leaving...and yet Craig Feruguson is doing great.

I've never liked KIlborn.  It was always as though he was laughing at his audience, not with them.

If you could vote for 2 I would have said he'd be great and anything is better than Rosie.  Should be interesting to check out when I'm home sick some day.  It's on at 9:00am here and that is almost always between when I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Oh yes, cause they actually improve his looks and he's probably like me; can't imagine not wearing the things. Even if some miracle gave me 20/20 I'd still probably wear my glasses.

If you want to see him in action without the glasses check out "The Aristocrats."  His segment was pretty funny.

Thought this was worth mentioning but not worth a whole new thread....

http://www.tmz.com/2007/08/10/when-plinko-attacks/

"TMZ has learned that Drew Carey was injured today on the set of "The Price is Right."

Sources on the set tell TMZ that today during rehearsals "Price's" new host got his arm caught in a game with some sort of rotating device. Wheel of misfortune!

Doesn't sound serious though -- we're told Carey was well enough to make his lunch appointment.

When we contacted his managers, all we were told was "He's fine and everything's OK." They had no additional info.

We've learned that Carey may see a doc this afternoon and could be back on the set later today.

One source told TMZ that Drew is back on the set, wearing a "soft cast." We're told a bruised bone is the diagnosis and he will return to see a specialist at a later date.

UPDATE: TMZ has learned that Drew got his arm caught in the revolving turntable on stage while rehearsing for the Grocery Game. While he was bruised up a bit, Carey is feeling wheely better. He's back at work joking around with crew members and even showing off his battle wounds on his iPhone! Come on down, Drew!"

In rehearsals and already the set is attacking him.....   ;)

Sounds like a clear case of the Patrick Ewing Theory.
