Most Riffable Movie
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:42:10 PM »
This isn't another worst movie thread, nor is it a movie wishlist. Tarantulas would pout at me if I posted another of either of those. ;^)

I'm convinced that Mike Nelson can riff ANYTHING. He's yet to fail me. But those of us playing at home might not have as much luck riffing on the likes of X-Men. There's a special kind of bad that a movie needs in order to be riffable by anyone and everyone who sees it, professional or no.

I'm wondering what movie has inspired the most successful home-riffing.

I actually had very good luck with Silent Hill (Much to my wife's annoyance.) :^)

What about you, the viewers at home?

Hmmm...a number of Sci Fi channel Originals.

There was one when the guy touched the space-ship and all these images flashed in his eyes...

I remember saying to a friend, "Hey look, his retinas get cable!"

Don't remember the movie title though, maybe it better off that way.

There have been several Saturday afternoons that I've spent riffing on SciFi Channel movies!  ;D

It is interesting how their movies are so bad, but their series are pretty good.

EDIT:  I usually don't watch tv shows (except "Heroes")that I don't already have on dvd (Fraiser, NewsRadio, Futurama.)  Yet, from what I have seen, the series stand to hold up against most other crap in tvland.

You know, my husband Dwayne and I were riffing on King Kong when it was in the theaters. I was kind of embarrassed because it was when it first came out but the monkey ASKED for it!!

My hatred of Eyes Wide Shut has been well documented in other threads, but I must admit that it made for possibly my favorite movie theater experience. "Yeahbuhwha," you say? Allow me to explain:

It was opening night and the combined lures of Stanley Kubrick's reputuation and the promise of boobs-a-plenty drew such crowds that both screening rooms were filled to capacity, which was exceedingly odd, as the film advertised nary an explosion. I guess any movie review that contains the words "Nicole Kidman" and "orgy" is guaranteed a big opening weekend box office, at least in my town.

As the movie rolled on my friend and I - both longtime MSTies - grew increasingly restless, and found ourselves riffing this celluloid travesty quietly to ourselves. I would usually be rather self-conscious making fun of a movie in a crowded theater, but much to my surprise, we weren't the only ones. Whispers grew into shouts, comments became heckles, and if there was anyone still trying to quietly enjoy the movie, well, they didn't seem to complain. Now, this wasn't an all-out, popcorn throwing, unruly situation, but amazingly just a theater full of people who realized it was up to them to provide the entertainment this evening.

My favorite moment: nearly the entire audience humming along in unison wih the unbearably repetitive soundtrack. It's like shouting out the punchline of a joke you've already heard. Maybe it was the group discomfort of a large number of strangers watching a movie that bordered a little too closely on porno, I dunno. But it felt a lot like when the whole crowd at a concert is singing along to a song that you love.

Much less of a group experience was me at the inscrutable French kung fu werewolf movie Brotherhood Of The Wolf screaming "END! For the love of God why aren't you over yet?! FINIS!" It was my birthday, and I just wanted to go home and get drunk. Very riffable movie though. It was in French and subtitled, and for some reason the sound effects were WAY louder than any other part of the soundtrack. Footfalls in the mud thundered like Michael Bay explosions. The theater must have been having some sort of problem with the sound system and then all the speakers suddenly went out. Dead silence. Some genius shouts out, "Hey, I can't hear anything!" "Yeah, I can't understand what they're saying!" replied someone with quicker wits than me. Ah, what a crappy movie.

Folks,

If there is one movie on the Planet Earth that is riffable to anyone and everyone, it's Turkish Star Wars, a.k.a. Dunyayi Kurtaran Adamhttp://www.thewavemag.com/pagegen.php?pagename=article&articleid=22122

It is from, you guessed it, Turkey, and it blatantly ripps off actual footage from the original Star Wars! Its title means "The Man who Saved the World", and it's one of the most jaw-droppingly bad movies of all time! This thing is beyond comparison, and is truly a sight to behold. There are two heroes who are fighting in a space battle, but their ship is shot down, and they crash land on a planet very much like Tatooine. The story has many similarities to Star Wars, but it's almost impossible to explain to those who have not seen it. If you manage to procure a copy from Ebay or some sort of online DVD outlet, you can get it with English subtitles, but really there's no point. The story makes absolutely no sense, yet the movie makes even LESS sense than the English subtitles!!

I've seen it on 3 separate occasions, with many friends, which makes it better. We have the best time coming up with new riffs, and amazingly, there is more to discover with every viewing!

I only wish it were easy to get a hold of. It's truly a one-of-a-kind viewing experience, and it's a blast to riff it with your friends!

Seek out Turkish Star Wars. As riffaholics, it is your solemn duty!

Trust me, you'll be glad you did!

I was actually at work, and I had to preview Swordfish.  Twice.

The first time I was on my own, so when the second time came round, I let loose.  My buddies joined in, and we riffed the heck out of it.  What an awful, awful film.  Great fun though.   ;D

Ahem....Troll 2  Riffs galore! I'm not kidding!

Please can't we all just get along and give Troll 2 a chance.  Thank you and now back to your regularly scheduled Tarantulas.

The most riffable movie i have ever seen is without a doubt, Resident Evil Apocalypse.  Head to toe one of the cheesiest movies ever made.  I went to it on opening night and was disapointed.  Went to it two days later because it was my brothers birthday and we started riffing on it 5 minutes in.  at first the people in front of us were pissed but eventually they chimed in as well. ;D

Despite being a huge fan, Lord of the Rings lends itself perfectly to riffing. My girlfriend and I have managed to irritate a few of our friends by doing this  :D

Super Mario Bros. !!!  Definately!  Hadn't even thought of it, but damn... What an easy target!

I'd say my best riffs were on a movie called "The Cat's Eye".  It was a number of years ago (so I can not recall any specific details of my riffing) and I only saw the last part of it, but it was gold!  story line about this creepy little action figure sized boogey man (complete with iddy bitty tiny knife) that keeps terrorizing this kid. His parents don't believe him and the kids is powerless to defend himself (even though he out weighs and sizes the thing by like 10,000:1) so who should come to his rescue? Well... not to spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it, but it's the family house cat.  The fight scene at the end... priceless on so many levels!   ;D
