Star Trek XI
Rude:
...
Like Blueguy said... it's supposedly a prequel that will recast all of the major characters from the original series. In fact, it's an old idea that's been thrown around for years and years now. I think that one of the Star Trek DVDs actually features some preproduction artwork that was eventually scrapped.
I'm not sure that i know of anyone who thinks that this is a good move for "the franchise." Anyone who isn't already dead-set against it has more of a wait-and-see attitude. Ya' know... as opposed to a "this is gonna' be great!" attitude.
Who knows? Personally though, i think it's gonna' blow.

I'm hoping for a Batman Begins, Casino Royale type of resurrection for the Star Trek franchise. Kirk and Spock are Star Trek for most people, and the best way to keep the brand from completely withering is to get back to what worked in the '60s - Kirk and Spock exploring the galaxy, making thinly veiled commentary on contemporary issues. The current Star Trek universe is way to complex for people to get into, which is what Paramount was thinking with Enterprise. The problem with Enterprise, however, was no Kirk and Spock. If JJ Abrams can successfully make a Star Trek film with Kirk and Spock on the Enerprise, doing what they do best, they might just wrestle the franchice away from the cripplingly campy Shatner nostalgia and have a viable brand again. Picture this: a movie titled, simply, Star Trek, with young, capable, charismatic actors playing Kirk, Spock, etc, who bear a decent resemblance to the original actors, with tastefully updated sets and costumes, and a gripping plot. Star Trek would be back, and I, for one, would be glad.
Hmm... Paramount's promising "major casting announcements" at Comic-Con. I hope the Matt Damon rumors are true.
RobtheBarbarian:
I wonder if Matt Damon could pull off the smarm to be Kirk. I like the idea of Keanu Reeves as Spock, though - just tell him to act like he normally does and we have a pretty good Vulcan. Or maybe a fence post.

That's just it - he can be an intelligent, decisive, bold leader while dialing down the smarm. I think Damon can do smug without oozing it from every pore like the Shat. Plus, he looks the part:

The trouble with Damon is that, if he stars in the movie, and they want to start a show based on it, part of the show's sucsess relies on Damon's willingness to be in the show. Same with Reeves, of course.
