Top Gun: Top Things to Look Out For
« on: September 29, 2006, 08:44:52 AM »
I might be "jumping the gun" here, heh heh...

But anyone got things they're looking out for when watching Top Gun?  Details, special scenes, riff-worthy moments?

Mine is:  A friend told me Tim Robbins is actually in this movie as one of the fighter pilots.  A check of the IMDb reveals the truth of this statement:  Tim Robbins is "Merlin."  I have no recollection of Robbins' lanky figure lurking about, but perhaps my memory is fuzzy with shirtless volleyball and silhouetted bouts of tonsil hockey.

Now that you mention it, its true...

it just adds to how unbelievable the movie is... Robbins is WAY too tall to be a jet pilot..

great.. now the movie is ruined. :(

i still say my favorite line for riffing will be, "ill fly with you anytime (jawsnap)"

that was so amazingly flaming it goes well beyond dont ask dont tell.

It seems like a lot of the rifftrax movies have a spot where the cast sings.  Star Trek V, Crossroads, Roadhouse had Jeff Healy, Fifth Element had that blue lady...now Top Gun.

What's the deal?

The X-Men never broke into song. I'm grateful. :^)

From what I hear though, Hugh Jackman is a really good singer.  But, it might have looked a little weird seeing Wolverine belt out "The Sound Of Music".

I will be thinking about Quintin Tarantino's monologue from Sleep With Me:

Quote
You know what one of the greatest ****ing scripts ever written in the history of Hollywood is? Top Gun.

[Duane: Oh, come on.]

Top Gun is ****ing great. What is Top Gun? You think it's a story about a bunch of fighter pilots. [Duane: It's about a bunch of guys waving their ****s around.] It is a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality. It is! That is what Top Gun is about, man.

You've got Maverick, all right? He's on the edge, man. He's right on the ****ing line, all right? And you've got Iceman, and all his crew. They're gay, they represent the gay man, all right? And they're saying, go, go the gay way, go the gay way. He could go both ways.

[Duane: What about Kelly McGillis?]

Kelly McGillis, she's heterosexuality. She's saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way, play by the rules, go the normal way. They're saying no, go the gay way, be the gay way, go for the gay way, all right? That is what's going on throughout that whole movie...

He goes to her house, all right? It looks like they're going to have sex, you know, they're just kind of sitting back, he's takin' a shower and everything. They don't have sex. He gets on the motorcycle, drives away. She's like, "What the ****, what the **** is going on here?" Next scene, next scene you see her, she's in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She's got the cap on, she's got the aviator glasses, she's wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy's going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I'm doing that through subterfuge, I'm gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it.

...

All right, but the REAL ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay fighting ****ing force, all right? And they're beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it's over, and they ****ing land, and Iceman's been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he's got him, all right? And what is the last ****ing line that they have together? They're all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, "Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!" And what does Maverick say? "You can ride mine!" Swordfight! Swordfight! ****in' A, man!

Never saw that movie but you know, his description really puts the whole movie in a different perspective.  :D

Seriously though, I saw this movie when I was young and for some reason it always seemed like two movies to me. I don't know why, maybe I slept through part of it, but the part when Maverick throws the dog tags into the ocean has always seemed like the end to me.

On the weird side, I've always tried to see if I can see into the bad guys' helmets.

Ah Quentin Tarantino, the great one-note wonder.  :-",

I don't mean to hijack the thread....but I've actually seen a production of "Oklahoma" on PBS with Hugh Jackman in the lead role.    My wife and I were so surprised, we kept watching it.     "Look!!   Wolverine is in Oklahoma!!"     BTW....he sings rather well....we were really surprised.

It won't be too long until there's a RiffTrax for [insert name of by-the-numbers animated feature with at least 3 musical scenes here].  I suppose those films where the cast sings at one point are picked in preperation, but that's just my guess. :P

Nothing to look out for, just don't fall asleep during it like I do. I couldn't even make it through one sitting with Bill and Mike there. I have never been able to watch it all in one sitting without falling asleep. I just can't believe that teenagers in the 80's liked this movie.
This is my signature.
