Why would you do that to yourself?

Well in the thread I posted, I talk about doing it for my wife who likes Nickelback. Also I was able to get on The Back's (i assume that fans call them The Back) guest list so it didn't cost me any money. The GA floor tickets were like $90 so there is that.

Were they any good? I didn't mind Nickelback when they first came out, but every single one of their songs sound basically the same.

They do have a formula and they stick to it. One of the complaints you always hear is that all the songs sound the same.  I had a similar conversation recently at work about this and if you look at bands like AC/DC, The Ramones, Bad Religion, The Offspring, Green Day, Motörhead etc all of those bands make the same records over and over. It is all relative. I will say though they did look like they were having fun the whole time and they covered all the arena rock cliches (city name, drinking and smoking, tons of pyro) I think they gave the fans their monies worth.  My wife enjoyed it. I enjoyed from the aspect of being at an arena rock spectacle.

You really are a swell guy, MrTorso. My husband wouldn't even turn on the subtitles for a tv show for me.

Just got back from seeing Weird Al in concert. The man still puts on a heck of a show. I got to see Frank's 2000 Inch TV and I want a New Duck performed live! I figured those songs would be well out of rotation.

Saw Katzenjammer tonight.  They were really great.  Versatile, slightly demented, and pretty hot:

And that's Fairport Convention done.  They were great.  Despite being a band that's been around for 45 years and gone through about two dozen members, they still looked and sounded the part, and looked as though they've been playing for even longer than their already long time together.

Patti Smith at the Detroit Institute of Arts, in the auditorium of the Detroit Film Theatre spend about 3/4 of it sorting out where people were sitting and related house managerial things and the last 1/4 sitting in the pit in front of the stage to deter the impulse of many attendees to jump up on stage, still great performances from Patti and her kids plus the other local musicians that filled out the band, even though the Bass channel was petering out. Due to this I probably had the best listening experience of anyone at the end. :)

The after-party was held in the Near Eastern Gallery of the Museum and that was nice, not least because it abuts the temporary photo exhibit room where a collection of her shots are being displayed and that afforded the chance to have an advance look at the exhibit.  Patti's a lovely girl, and her photos are mostly worth looking at (a few are a bit, er, instagramatic let's say, but most are really interesting, in a good way).

Just got back from The Chieftains.  They were awesome - about 200 people got up to dance at the end, doing Irish jigs around the concert hall and up onto the stage.

Just got back from the Imaginary Cities, Buried Beds, mewithoutYou show in Pawtucket, RI.

I'd never heard of Imaginary Cities but they were awesome. (Then I realized that one of the guys occasionally does stuff with The Weakerthans.)  Buried Beds were ok.  They weren't bad, but occasionally the violin just didn't "fit".

mewithoutYou was really good.  Second time I've seen them.  My only complaint was that the set was almost entirely stuff off the new album.  I really like the new album, but the one older song I wanted to hear that is pretty much a staple of their shows wasn't in the set list. (Or they weren't able to play it because the drummer broke his snare drum on the last song, a particularly more rocking version of Circles, resulting in an acoustic encore instead of the full band.)

Just got back from seeing Departure at the House Of Blues.  They are a Journey tribute band.  They weren't half bad.  Musically they were just about spot on to my ears and the lead singer sounded pretty much like Steve Perry.  Although he had a bit of trouble holding some of the notes as long as Steve would.

I couldn't stay for the entire show as my back started stiffening up after an hour or so of the concert.  I hate standing room only venues.

But what I saw was decent and it was only $10 so you can't beat that.

I personally love standing at shows (and I'm a fat dude!) but you can get tired easily so it's always nice to have a choice.

Another Friday night, another tribute act at the House Of Blues.  They have been booking them fairly regularly and getting decent crowds for them as well.  Last night was Appetite For Destruction, a Guns N Roses tribute band.  It was like 1992 all over again with Fake Axl and Fake Slash jamming just like old times.  I loved it and had a blast.

Sorry for the blurry pic, I take pics for shit with my phone.

Andre Rieu, in Norfolk. That was several years ago though. I don't attend many concerts.
