mmm, Marx Brothers.  But it seems like everything has it's time to shine.  Even the Marx Brothers started going way down hill after Duck Soup.  Maybe instead of going back to the 80's we need to find some new form of comedy to embrace.  I agree that 80's comedy's are generally of a higher quality than todays, but there are little gems that are genuinely funny, like Little Miss Sunshine.

I enjoy Marx Brothers movies, but Groucho's personal comedy style has always pissed me off. He's playing the cutup and the straightman at the same time. For example:

"I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. What it was doing in my pajamas I'll never know."

That is a Fozzie Bear joke. Groucho surrounded himself with three brothers and Margaret DuMont, but still insisited on setting up his own jokes. That is egomania right there.

thats not every routine he did, i already mentioned the whole chico scam in horse feathers.  plus that groucho routine isnt a comedic something that is unique to him.  leslie neilson often does it as well.  i dont think it was really an ego thing. just a comedic choice.

Well as long as the thread maker has hopped on the Marx train, I'll chime in.  When the writing is good, I think Groucho can pull off setting up his own jokes.  And it fit his character in most of the films, which was arrogant and shallow.  But when the jokes aren't written so well, it's harder to pull off.

Loved most of the Marx Brothers' stuff, but I can't stand Harpo.  I want to punch him very hard in the nose every time I see him on screen. 

If we're talking about classic comedy, then what about Chaplin or Keaton? The scene in The Gold Rush where the shack is about to fall off the cliff made me laugh so hard I had to stop the DVD.  There's also a great scene in Keaton's Seven Chances, where he's being chased by a horde of women in their wedding dresses. 

I really like Laurel and Hardy too...

I remember one day...on a whim...I picked up Chaplin's "City Lights" at the video store.     I was curious to see if silent movie era comedy would still hold up in the 90's (the time in which I rented it)....

....I laughed til my sides hurt....

I still regret having not purchased that yet.....I really want to get that CC boxed set that just came out recently....I'm sure it's full of gems.


Edit: on the topic of the original thread starter.....The Breakfast Club was *the* true gem of the 80's comedy.....although it was a bit of comedy/drama.    Still on my top 5 films in the history of cinema.

I love Broken Lizard movies.

Club Dread is one of the most annoying films I've ever seen. It's just scene after scene of faulty setups and continuously bad jokes. Super Troopers is even worse - I couldn't even watch it all the way through because it was so painful. I've once heard Broken Lizard compared to Monty Python. The very thought of these two comedy troupes being placed on the same level makes me want to vomit.

I love the Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy (still waiting until I can get my hands on Legend Films' release of "March of the Wooden Soldiers"), and Charlie Chaplin, among others. Classic comedy is the best.

and I secretly enjoyed The Pink Panther

I like both the old and new films. Peter Sellers and Steve Martin are both very funny. The 2006 film is a pretty solid reboot of the series.
