Rifftrax Recommendations Thread
« on: December 25, 2020, 10:01:29 PM »
I've noticed we don't have a thread dedicated to Rifftrax recommendations.

Anyway, since I got the annual gift certificate, can anyone recommend some fantasy or sci fi Rifftrax?  80s cheese is preferable, but anything out of that decade isn't necessarily a deal-breaker for me.

I recommend R.O.T.O.R. every chance I get. It's my absolute favorite Rifftrax. There's always something stupid on the screen to marvel at. Never dull. Hawk the Slayer is great fantasy cheese, and Yor, the Hunter from the Future has Reb Brown fighting dinosaurs. Future Force and its sequel, Future Zone are both pretty great, too.

Incidentally, here's a whole category in the catalog for '80s cheese: https://www.rifftrax.com/catalog/genre/80s-cheese

I'd probably go with:

Hawk the Slayer
Ator: Fighting Eagle
Space Mutiny

You may want to peruse this thread:

Also Amazon Prime has several Rifftrax VoDs on it.

ROTOR is definitely arguably my favorite riff. Prisoners of the Lost Universe is as low budget cheesy sci fi as you can get, and with the original Apollo form Battlestar Galactica. Hawk the Slayer is indeed bottom budget fantasy with Palance once again chewing the scenery.

But if you want to do something different The Sword and the Sorceror is less cheesy and watchable on its own, though it still has tons of issues. There was a definite budget to it and while the storytelling is crap, it keeps moving. My Two Richards, Moll (from Night Court) and Lynch (from Werewolf, Invasion USA, etc), are the bad guys in it. i remember the riffing being entertaining, but I actually liked the movie itself to a degree.
Oh yes, the hero has a sword that shoots swords. And that's not a typo.

I'm about halfway through, but I'm ready to throw in my recommendation for Battle for the Lost Planet for some more Sci-Fi '80s cheese.

Should've mentioned that I already have ROTOR.

Going the other way, avoid Abraxas like the plague. It might sound like it has potential, but it's not. It's a total slog to get through. One of their worst ones, I'm afraid. Cybertracker is dull as well.

Cyborg Cop 2 was decent as I recall, though it has been a while.

I'd recommend ROTOR.
