Bittersweet Music
« on: May 11, 2007, 12:12:34 PM »
I'm in the mood for songs that while maybe they aren't outright sad, aren't extremely happy either.  An example: Be Gentle With Me by Boy Least Likely To.  If you just listen to the music, it sounds so happy and cheerful, but the lyrics are a different matter.  The line that sticks with me the most "If I wasn't so happy/ I wouldn't be so scared of dying".  It seems to be about a guy who is afraid to let himself be happy because he knows the happier he is, the more he'll be hurt if something bad happens.

Other examples: Ben Folds (Five) songs, including pretty much everything on the Unauthorized Biography of Rheinhold Messner; Selfless, Cold, and Composed; The Last Polka; Missing The War; Evaporated; Carrying Cathy; Landed (and I realize some of these songs are more just outright sad than bittersweet, but still)

So what are some other songs that would fit in the parameters I've set here?

EDIT:  Oh, I forgot to mention Still Fighting It.
CROW:  (Sinisterly) The Secret Government Eggo Project...
--Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie

"Jason, Chess is a game of chance."
-- My friend Shawn to my friend Jason upon being defeated at a game of Chess.

Wonder if They Might Be Giants counts as Bittersweet. They sure do come up with happy ways to sing about depressing things.

Yo La Tengo's Summer Sun is an amazing melancholy record.  It's super low key, brushed drums etc and features some amazing writing in the kinda alt country mode.  If the track Season of The Shark doesn't stir your soul you're dead.

For anyone who doesn't know who They are, I've always given the shorthand description of "children's songs about the Apocalypse."  :)

Till My Head Falls Off - They Might Be Giants. An energetic, upbeat ditty about someone whose life is being destroyed by schizophrenia.

"However Much I Booze," by the Who.  As Pete Townshend is lamenting the state of his life, the band is skipping along lightheartedly behind him.  Catchy and gloomy at the same time.

The Smiths' "Girlfriend in a Coma".  Such a happy, shiny tune to back a lyric about a guy in denial over his best girl's pending death.  The "let me whisper my last goodbyes" at the end always puts a lump in my throat.

Well, it's an instrumental, but 'Moving Through Time" by Angelo Badalamenti is a great piece of bittersweet music. Plus, it's from one of my favorite movies http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000002MF9001010/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_010/102-9473092-7176902

Is it sad that the only song I know that kinda fits the bill is "Cat's In The Cradle?"
