MST3K Live Tour 2018

Just found out the wife is getting off at noon the day of the Milwaukee show and is off the next day, so (provided we don't have a blizzard or major snowstorm which is always possible in Wisconsin in November) we'll be going to the Milwaukee show and I won't have to sell my tickets.

Live tour started this week. Tonight is show 4. Anyone been to a show yet this time around and have any non-spoiler reviews?

We went to opening night in Portland, Maine. It was hilarious! The movie, "The Brain", was one of the most riffable movies that they've ever done, and there were many great riffs. I hope they tape and release a live performance on DVD or Blu-ray.

Cool. I was hoping to catch both movies, but only 1 show in Milwaukee this tour and it's The Brain (2 Milwaukee shows last tour, but we weren't able to make it to Milwaukee and caught Eegah in Green Bay which isn't a tour stop this year).

Yesterday I saw both the Brain and Deathstalker II get riffed by MST3K Live! I had a wonderful time at both of them!

Kinga and Max were absent and Synthia played the role of the Mad for the show. The Brain gamified the riffs à la a fake game show between Jonah and Joel wherein the riffers had to riff a certain way (e.g. brand name references, callbacks, inner monologue, running jokes). I personally preferred Deathstalker II, where there were a lot of video game and feminist riffs in spite of there being no gamification of the format. The only thing I didn’t like was that the voice of crow for this tour, Grant Baccioco, sounded too similar to the voice of Tom Servo, Tim Ryder. I think a Baccioco/Vaughn combo would work as well as the Yount/Ryder combination did last year, but there’s too much vocal similarity otherwise. Also, I miss Kinga and Max.

Really enjoyed the Milwaukee show on Thursday night. Some observances (which I'll "spoiler" just because the last 2 shows on the tour are tonight):

-Didn't get the Q & A with Joel that started the show on the last tour and I was OK with that. Not that the Q & A on that tour (or the ones he did at the Cinematic Titanic shows I saw) was bad, it's just that I think I've seen enough of them now to feel I don't really hear anything new.
-After the last tour I wanted more Synthia and we got that as she played the mad/host. Didn't really play a Mary Jo clone though like she'd play up to this point (in addition to being the new Gypsy), but was still good in becoming more her own character and got a few riffs in herself in addition to her host duties.
-I found the game show format to be rather confusing (not the riffing, just didn't totally understand the explanation of the premise).
-A good part of my confusion was likely due to the acoustics at the venue (The Riverside in Milwaukee) being rather shitty. I missed probably 1/4 of everything that was said due to the echo in the theater. Caught enough to still really enjoy the show, but it increased my desire for a video of the tour to be released so I can go back and catch what I missed.
 -Totally agree with this observance by IC. I thought both fill-ins did a great job, but they did sound a lot alike.

 -Glad I hadn’t seen “The Brain” before. It was a great choice for a riff. If we don’t ever get a recording of the live show, I hope it gets riffed in a future season or by Rifftrax.

I'll add that the cost of merch was ridiculously expensive. $35 for a t-shirt. $100 for a spring snake (left over from the last tour I guess) and $100 for a sweatshirt. Didn't buy anything.

They were here in Norfolk a couple weeks ago. I wish I could have gone to see them, but tickets were like $50, and I just couldn't afford it.

Does anyone know if any of these shows were, or are going to be, recorded?

So an Albuquerque theater seems to have spoiled an upcoming MST3K tour.

Also THE MST3K TOUR IS COMING TO NM! I'M SO JAZZED! Just have to wait for tickets to go on sale. Which will probably come after a much more official announcement.

Interesting that Joel is mentioned, but not Jonah.

This is good news because it suggest there will be a 13th season.

The circus theme shows Joel still loves innovating and working with the variety show format.

Indeed. I wouldn't neccesarily take that to mean Jonah is out if there is a season 13, but he may not be available for the tour.
