List of Crap #105: Top 50 Rock Artists

Rock and Roll!

That's what we are talking about today!  Birthed from such influences as Jazz, Boogie Woogie, Gospel, Rhythym and Blues (and something called "Jump Blues) and Country music, rock was birthed in the American South in the late 40's, though hints of what was to be was certainly evident in music as far back as the 20's.  If anything, rock was the result of a cultural collision between black and white America, though the exact nature is still up for debate.  Arguments have ranged from it being a rebranding rhythm and blues for a white audience while others have stated that it was a hybrid of the music of both cultures.

Of course, the slow evolution of rock from other genres makes it hard, if not impossible, to truly decide what the first rock song was.  But there's no denying it had a HUGE cultural impact, becoming heavily associated with the youth culture.  Rock would go on to mutate and spin off into countless different genres: punk, metal, new wave, prog rock, math rock, the ever-nebulous "alternative" rock, and so much more.  And the subgenres within each genre was also ridiculously diverse.  It seemed like while not everything was rock and rock couldn't be everything, the possibilities were nonetheless endless.  And beyond that, rock went beyond music.  It can be fashion, a lifestyle, an attitude and a language to name a few.  I mean, people decide that very non-musical things and behaviours are decidedly "punk" and "metal".

So, yeah, this is bound to be a diverse list.  That said, there are also bands that are going to show up fairly high because their music is so ubiquitous to our culture it feels like part of our language.  They are touchstones that everyone knows and in most cases breed togetherness rather than contempt with their familiarity.  So I expect we are going to have a lot of fun sharing both our different tastes and our shared touchstones together!

Now, for you first timers, here's how our very easy activity works:

HOW IT WORKS:

Create a list of your favorite rock artists, each numbered from 1 to 25 like so:

1. Your favorite rock artist.
2. Your second favorite rock artist.
3. Your third most favorite rock artist.
And so on until you get to #25.

Once the list is complete, send it to me via Personal Message, not via this thread.

When all submissions are in, I'll score them. Your #1 choice gets 25 points, your #2 choice gets 24, all the way down to your #25 choice, which gets 1. I add up the points, and then rank the characters in a list here in this forum for your enjoyment. Should you submit a list of less than 25 items, then your points are reduced accordingly. A list with only 5 entries only gets 5 points for the number one choice, so the more you can think of, the better.

Qualifications:
1) It can be a solo artist or a band.  Members of bands who have had solo careers can be seperate entries.  Bands that have changed their name are still considered one entry.  If you have, say, Prince, don't put Prince and Prince and the Revolution as seperate entries.  I feel they aren't different enough entities to count.
2) This will include all genres of rock, including most modern pop.  If you aren't sure something counts, don't be afraid to ask.
3) Common, perfectly good genres that don't count, unless they are mixed with rock in some way: crooning, hip-hop, country, folk.  But I'll try to leave that up to you to decide.  There's one musician I love who does have the soft rock label, but to me he doesn't count since while his music is fantastic, I just can't think of it as rock.  So ball's in your court.

I think that covers everything, since this is a pretty easy topic.  Though I am expecting a WIDE range of genres and bandsand a lot of different entries.

The due date is September 9th!  That gives you a little under TWO WEEKS.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask below.

What about artists who span multiple genres, including rock?

As long as they didn't do just one or two rock songs, that's totally fine.

I could have sworn that this LoC was "Greatest Rock Bands". Now I notice it is Favorite Rock Artist, both band and solo. I had a list ready, but now it is no good.

Nope.  Originally I had it as "Rock Artists/Bands", and then just shortened it when it won.  Also, no "greatest" this is purely subjective.  I have bands on my list that I love but I wouldn't say they are among the greatest, I just happen to love them.

I guess music is a little more accessible than NES games.  :(
