The Top 400 All Time Greatest Cartoon Shorts
« on: July 10, 2017, 06:15:45 PM »
I once belonged to a now long defunct Yahoo Group with hundreds of members, who's topic was golden age cartoons. One day a prominent member suggested that we all contribute to what would be the groups official list of the top 1,000 animated shorts of all time. Each participant was asked to send in a list of 200 ranked in order of greatness, that they felt earned a place in the top 1,000. Around 97 lists were submitted before the deadline ( they gave us a whole year to compile our individual lists, ) and the whole thing was handed off to a member who was good with math ( who was possibly an accountant ) who would add everything up, and use formulas to break any ties. He announced that there were less than 420 individual cartoons submitted, so we would need to settle for a top 400 list. Once the math was completed, the results were emailed to another member who would do a synopsis for each entry along with the studio, director and cartoon series it belonged to.  The final list was then posted on Yahoo Groups version of a forum ( actually, an email chain. Very primitive. ). While there were a few glaring omissions, we were proud of our list. About a year and a half later the group moderator announced that he was shutting down all of his Yahoo groups because there were too many spammers. So I cut, pasted and saved the top 400 list before the group was removed for good.

Recently I was going through CDs of my backup files, looking to see if one of my audio files ( one with The Film Crew reviewing "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" ) had survived last year's criptowall ransomware attack. I found a CD with a lot of old wordpad documents I had saved, one of them being the "400 Greatest Cartoon Shorts" list.  I checked to see if anyone else had published the list on another website. I found a lot of other top cartoon lists, but not this one.  I hate the idea of something that was worked on so hard by so many would end up deleted from history. ( Like TV Guide did with Jump the Shark.com, and IMDb did with their mesage boards. ) So I thought I would reprint the list here, where maybe a few members will appreciate it ( and perhaps there are a few members her who actually belonged to that Yahoo Group and participated in making the list, and would get a kick out of seeing it again. ).  I'll just start with #s 400 through 381, where most of the obscure and oddball entries are. And if there is any interest from the members here, then I will cut and paste the rest of the list. I have decided to remove the synopsis from each and replace them with something that did not exist back in 2004, YouTube videos. Where a cartoon is not available on Youtube I have added just enough of my own synopsis to let you know which cartoon it is.

#400-#381

# 400
Bunco Busters ( 1955 )
Series: Woody Woodpecker
Studio: Walter Lantz Studio
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Director: Paul J Smith

NOTE: I was hoping to have youtube links to all the cartoons. But it seems that in the past couple of years Universal, Disney, Warner Bros. and a lot of other studios have been busy removing their cartoons from the internet. Just a year or two ago you could find all of these cartoons on Youtube. Now I can only find the public domain cartoons. For those of you who cant quite remember which Woody Woodpecker cartoon this is, it is the one narrated by Capt. Haddock of the Bunco Department, who keeps repeating the phrase "If Woody had gone right to the police, this would never have happened". Haddock is talking about "The Case of the Gullible Woodpecker" where after inheriting a fortune, Buzz Buzzard tricks Woody out of it with a phony treasure map.

# 399
Mickey's Follies ( 1929 )
Series: Mickey Mouse
Studio: Walt Disney Studios
Distributor: Celebrity Pictures
Director: Wilfred Jackson
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/RtPx4y39Bd0" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/RtPx4y39Bd0</a>

# 398
Porky's Cafe ( 1942 )
Series: Looney Tunes
Studio: Leon Schlesinger Studios
Distributor: Warner Brothers
Director: Chuck Jones
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/GVr6mNySxoA" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/GVr6mNySxoA</a>

# 397
The Owl And The Pussycat ( 1939 )
Series: Terrytoon
Studio: Terrytoons
Distributor: 20th Century Fox
Director: Eddie O'Donnelly
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/IKfzkUOe0_A" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/IKfzkUOe0_A</a>

# 396
Dizzy Red Riding Hood ( 1931 )
Series: Talkartoons
Studio: Fleischer Studios
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Director: Dave Fleischer
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/lj-LDzzs-Wg" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/lj-LDzzs-Wg</a>

# 395
The Flea Circus ( 1954 )
Series: M.G.M. Cartoon
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Distributor: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Director: Tex Avery

NOTE: Another cartoon removed from Youtube. Pretty much most if not all of the Tex Avery cartoons made the top 400. Even the lame ones like The Flea Circus where a clown flea finds it impossible to win the effections of a tightrope walker flea named Fifi

# 394
Porky The Rain Maker ( 1936 )
Series:Looney Tunes
Studio: Leon Schlesinger Studios
Distributor: Warner Brothers
Director: Tex Avery
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Lj_SaIboLqg" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Lj_SaIboLqg</a>

# 393
Ragtime Bear ( 1949 )
Series: Jolly Frolics
Studio: UPA Productions
Distributor: Columbia Pictures
Director: John Hubley

NOTE: The cartoon that introduced Mr. Magoo. Strangely, none o the other Mr. Magoo cartoons made the list.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/0y33r9bilw8" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/0y33r9bilw8</a>

# 392
The Wild Chase ( 1965 )
Series: Merrie Melodies
Studio: DePatie-Freleng Enterprise for Warner Brothers
Distributor: Warner Brothers
Directors: David DePatie and Friz Freleng

NOTE: Another cartoon missing from Youtube. This was one of the underwhelming Warner cartoons farmed out to DePatie-Freleng studios just before Warner Bros. decided to discontinue distributing cartoon shorts. While this is just as bad as all the other DePatie-Freleng cartoons, it does have the historic race between Speedy Gonzales and The Road Runner to see who was the fastest cartoon character, which the cartoon unfortunately never resolves.

# 391
Tall In The Trap ( 1962 )
Series: Tom and Jerry II
Studio: Rembrandt Films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Distributor: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Director: Gene Deitch

NOTE: There seemed to have been fans of the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry films made at the Czechoslovakian animation studio Rembrant Films. This is the only copy of the film available on YouTube, which seems to have been altered so that the copyright filter would not detect it.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/bNwSgj1bsiA" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/bNwSgj1bsiA</a>

# 390
Dig That Dog ( 1954 )
Series: Cartune
Studio: Walter Lantz Productions for Universal
Distributor: Universal
Director: Ray Patterson

NOTE: No longer on Youtube. This was the one where Percie Petipoint brings home a tiny puppy from the pet store and names it Cuddles, not realizing it is a Great Dane. Cuddles likes to remove things from Percie's house and bury them in the back yard. As Cuddles grows into a big dog, he begins to bury furnature, and eventually even the house, and finally the moon itself.

# 389
Hare Splitter ( 1948 )
Series: Merrie Melodies
Studio: Warner Brothers
Distributor: Warner Brothers
Director: Friz Freleng

NOTE: Removed from Youtube. Bugs Bunny and another larger rabbit named Casbah are both in love with Daisy Lou. When Bugs discovers that Daisy Lou is not home, he disguises himself as her so he can prank Casbah.

# 388
Pink Outs ( 1967 )
Series: Pink Panther
Studio: DePatie-Freleng Enterprises
Distributor: United Artists
Director: Gerry Chiniquy
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/1q2hu-mDtKs" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/1q2hu-mDtKs</a>

# 387
Krakatoa ( 1945 )
Series: Mighty Mouse
Studio: Terrytoon
Distributor: 20th Century Fox

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/iVMQcPAKfGk" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/iVMQcPAKfGk</a>

# 384
We Aim To Please ( 1934 )
Series: Popeye
Studio: Fleischer Studios
Distributor: Paramount
Director: Dave Fleischer

NOTE: Many of the cartoons on Youtube have been altered so that the Youtube copyright filter will not detect them.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/HwnSCFIg1K0" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/HwnSCFIg1K0</a>

# 383

I'm an interested lurker. I don't think I've ever seen peace on Earth. It must be something to topple What's Opera Doc. I have to check that out.

No The Dot and the Line?

I think at the time everyone felt they were obligated to include Peace On Earth in the top 50 of their lists and it just ended up accumulating points. Otherwise, most of the lists contributed were bias towards specific animators or characters. Those who were Disney fans included very few Warner Brothers cartoons on their lists, and vise versa with the Warner Brothers fans. Top loading lists with single series or characters contributed to quite a few notable cartoons being skipped. ( For example, no Roger Rabbit shorts. )

Peace On Earth is not really obscure. It is just that it was considered too extreme to be syndicated for television with the other MGM cartoons. It is a heavy handed anti war film that MGM could have never released a year later when the U.S. was in WWII. It begins with animals celebrating Christmas. One of the animals keeps saying: "Peace on earth, good will to men." and one of the younger animals asks "What is men?".  The older animal then tells the story about how all the humans killed each other in a great world war and are now extinct. Flashbacks show the war, and the moment the last two humans alive kill each other. A real chilling cartoon.
