Season 12
« on: July 01, 2017, 08:34:26 PM »
Are they making a season 12?  I found season 11 to be hit and miss.  Mostly miss TBH but I think they can get better.  Talk slower.  Work on the Mad's performances.  New Tom voice IMO.

No news yet. I'm betting there might be news out of San Diego Comic Con later this month.

I didn't really like season 11.  It felt like a chore to get through.  Felicia Day is a delight, but this whole thing felt like some fan project.  It usually wasn't funny, and I hated the joke about Jonah re-enacting the opening sequence every time.  It made no sense and was completely unnecessary.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

Have you been on the "Watch Out For Snakes!" tour? They fixed a lot of problems with Season 11, including:
  • funnier riffs
  • funnier host segments
  • return of screen interaction à la Hexfield Viewscreen
  • Tom's voice sounds distinct (because it's a different voice actor)
  • Kinga is more threatening
  • riffs aren't at a rapid-fire pace but slower so audience could laugh
I could go on and on. They clearly listened to all the people like you who didn't like Season 11 (or felt it wasn't up to snuff) and addressed in the live show. Then again, Star Trek: The Next Generation's first season was a stinker as well. If MST3K is renewed for a Season 12, it can only get better!

It's good that they're trying to improve, but I'm not optimistic.  Joel is the main creative force behind this, and I always found most Joel episodes to be unfunny.  I'll still give it a shot if another season comes out.

I'm glad there will be a season 12, but I won't cut it nearly as much slack as I did season 11, which, on the rewatch, I find pretty weak.
They made a five-minute song seventeen times longer. We're cutting it down to size. The QuipTrack for The Christmas Shoes is AVAILABLE NOW at QuipTracks.com.

I want them to drop the formula. There's a lot of 'by the numbers' for each episode of season 11.
Tom Servo must fly around the screen - Tick
Gypsy must once an episode randomly drop a line - Tick
and so on.

Just improve production in general, less use of bubbles to hide flubs and stuff.

Ehhh... Tom flying around, Gypsy dropping in with a basket, etc. didn't bother me. Far too many big monster movies did. When they work, they can be great, but I always find them more miss than hit. Would like an old black and white teens in trouble movie or two and no more than two rubber suited dinosaur movies. And yeah, replacing Tom with the guy from the tour would be a big improvement, but don't see that happening.

less use of bubbles to hide flubs and stuff.

That would be my main wish.

Hopefully they'll have a bit more of a relaxed schedule this time? Also they won't be hiding Felicia's pregnancy, so that might allow them to do more interesting things with the staging etc.
FINE

Hopefully their budgets will go up.  The bubble wipes I didn't like. The movie choices were fine with me. The Bot voices were fine with me. The rapid fire riffing was fine with me too. Gypsy miniature coming in was ...eh?  I don't think I laughed at any of her riffs. Tom flying and Crow walking was alright. Don't think I needed it every episode.

Pretty sure the bubbles are ambiance. Kinga's using water- based technology, so the bubbles are supposed to be static.

Yeah, but they also clearly cover flubs, and very awkwardly

I actually didn't notice the flubs but once or twice.

I like gypsy dropping down and riffing but there was a little too much gimmicky stuff with the silhouettes in theater overall. It's a lot more fun when it's occasional.

I recall Joel saying they were already doing the writing for 12 so maybe they will be ahead on that and have more time to iron out problems. Season 11 fell somewhere between Season 1 and 2 in quality. I think they can only get better from here. It's not like they need to reinvent the wheel.
