Huh.

I enjoyed the shit out of this book. I look forward to watching this movie in 20 minute segments sometime in 2019-2020.

So is Spielberg going to cameo in the movie as himself? I've never read the book so I don't know if he's in it, but he's just as much of an 80s icon as the DeLorean or any of the fanboy favorite things in the trailer.

Variety review confirms Mechagodzilla is in it:

Quote
Have no fear: In “Ready Player One,” there is plenty of vicarious fantasy combat, notably a war of the worlds that features the Iron Giant as well as the red-eyed, gleaming silver Mechagodzilla. Every time a creature like that shows up (at one point, even the monster fetus from “Alien” makes a kind of palm-buzzer cameo), it’s entrancingly cool. “Ready Player One” tells a breathless and relatively coherent story — essentially, the future of civilization is riding on the outcome of a video game — but the movie, first and foremost, is a coruscating explosion of pop-culture eye candy.

It's a minor nitpick, I suppose, but the concept in the novel is that everyone was obsessed with '80s pop culture. Things like Mechagodzilla, King Kong, Tomb Raider, and Iron Giant aren't '80s. Granted, they're things that '80s kids tend to love anyway, so like I said, it's a minor nitpick.

So, it's a live action / CGI version of South Park's Imaginationland?

it does find the Iron Giant battling Mechagodzilla while a rock-heavy soundtrack featuring everything from Blondie to the Bee Gees underscores the mayhem.

The book is divisive. Pretty sure the movie is gonna be divisive. I'm in the camp that loves the book for the sheer joy of it, but I know it's flawed at best. I'm expecting a flawed movie, at best. If it can just be FUN, I'll be happy.

I'm the same way. I enjoyed the book, and I've also enjoyed Mike and Conor's podcast ripping it apart, so I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with the results. Either it'll be great fun, or riffable.

I really enjoyed the book as well. Struggling to even get started on Armada, so I guess it's lightning in a bottle.

Apparently this movie has its own wiki now.  I don't know how true any of this is but here's what it has to say:
