Spike

93 Points, 5 Lists, #1 Johnny Unusual

Unbiography
Spike is a recurring character, playing both antagonist and ally in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slay and its spin-off Angel.  Once a human poet named William who was the laughing stock of the upper crust for his bad poetry, William was approached by the vampire Drusilla who consoled him in his hour of need and turned him into a vampire.  From then on, he was hopelessly in love with Drusilla, which caused tension since she clearly had an attraction to the vampire Angelus, the vampire who transformed her.  Along with Darla, the vampire who turned Angel, the four travled the world causing strife and pain for fun.  When Angel was cursed with a soul, the group split up and Spike and Drusilla began traveling together looking for kicks.

The two ended up in Sunnydale, looking for a way to heal Drusilla after an attack in Prague left her severly weakened.  Despite running afoul and being defeated by vampire slayer Buffy Summers, Spike was able to heal Drusilla.  But not long after, Angelus' curse was lifted, causing him to join Spike and Drusilla's side.  Since Drusilla was once again interested in Angelus and Angelus was looking to destroy the world, Spike betrayed them to Buffy in order to win back Drusilla.

However, after that Spike's relationship with Drusilla soured, especially since she caught her making out with a chaos demon ("Have you ever seen one of those things?  All slime and antlers."), making Spike more interested in killing Buffy in the name of his pride.  However, after a run in with the mysterious government agency The Initiative, Spike was left with a micro chip in his head, that made him unable to harm humans without causing great pain.  Spike ended up siding with Buffy out of self-preservation and though betrayed her to her enemies, he ended up becoming a reluctant ally once again (though he wasn't shy about reminding them that he hated Buffy and her friends).

Later, Spike would come to realize, to his horror, that he loved Buffy, and though he tried to find substitutes such as roleplay with the vampire Harmony and a Buffy robot (no, really), he couldn't pull himself away.  Eventually, he confided in Buffy the truth and though she didn't recipricate, the two ended up understanding and Spike became a part of the Scooby Gang.  Kinda.

Spike is both a lover and a fighter.  Though a born romantic, he also loves the thrill of battle and hunting, even turning his strength on other villains when he can no longer hunt humans.  Though fairly formidible and evil as a vampire, he's less hung up on accomplishing greater evils (ending or ruling the world) so much as he just works to get what he wants.  He has a love of punk music and the TV soap opera Passions.  Despite his romantic nature, he is often very glib and tends to be prideful, with his biggest accomplishment being the murder to two slayers at his own hands.

Count Duckula

94 Points, 7 Lists, #1 K1

Unbiography
Count Duckula is a recurring character on Danger Mouse and the star of the spin-off Count Duckula.  Duckula is the 17th in a line of vampire ducks.  In his own series (the two versions differ noticeably), Duckula is the 17th of his family line of vampire ducks.  His ancestors were dangers who were all killed to stop their evil but the remains of the previous could be resurrected as the next Duckula.  However, when the keepers of Duckula's ancestral home were performing the ritual to resurrect Duckula, they accidentally used ketchup instead of blood, bringing forth this new Duckula as a vegetarian.

This Duckula has no interested in evil, but he is extremely interested in fame, constantly coming up with plans or traveling with the intent of becoming a star.  Duckula is also much more interested in the modern world and finds his own home gloomy and depressing.  His butler Igor is constantly trying to turn him into a "proper" vampire, much to Duckula's disinterest.  He also has a nanny/housekeeper named Nanny who is supremely strong but very dim.

Duckula's Castle also has the ability to teleport across the world, but always returns to it's original spot by dawn.  Duckula only seems to have a few vampiric powers, such as teleportation, but he is able to move freely in the sunlight with no ill-effects.  He is also a vegetarian, with his favourite food being broccoli sandwiches.  Though Duckula is often selfish, he can be good-natured and tries to be helpful, though often causes strife for those he does.

The Vampire Queen.

Though I was the only one who voted for him, I also had the Vampire King from Stakes on the list.  He's a cool dude, even though he rips off all his clothes and has a little baby tantrum.  The Fool almost made it too, simply because he was the only vampire voiced by Ron Funches.

Angel

95 Points, 6 Lists, #3 Johnny Unusual

Unbiography
Angel is a heroic vampire in both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series.  Angel was once a loutish young man until he was turned into a vampire by another vampire named Darla.  Gaining the name Angelus, he began to cause mayhem wherever he went, taking particular pleasure in tormenting the innocent and tainting that which is pure.  This included turning a pure young psychic girl into a mad vampire.

With his crew, he raised Cain across the world until the family of one of his victims cursed him with a soul.  Now feeling guilt and regret after a lifetime of evil, Angelus split from his band of killers, lost and alone for many decades.  Eventually a mystery man pointed him in the direction of a young girl named Buffy, suggesting that rather than spending his time feeling sorry for himself, he work at redeeming himself.  He and Buffy, a young girl destined to fight evil forces with her special powers, ended up battling evil in the town of Sunnydale (built on a mouth to Hell).  Eventually, their love lead to sex, with Angel unaware that the curse would be lifted if he found true happiness.  After sex, Angel become Angelus once more and now joined Buffy's foes in trying to destroy her and the Earth.  Angelus was seemingly killed by Buffy, but Angel broke free of the Hell dimension he was sent to.

Realizing the two could not be intimate again, their relationship became awkward.  Eventually, Angel decided that the two should part ways and that he'd continue his road to redemption elsewhere.  He left for Los Angeles and ended up opening Angel Investigations along with Buffy's high school rival Cordelia.  There they fought numerous monsters that stalked the city, and in particular was a thorn in the side of the law firm Wolfram & Hart, a company that enabled the forces of evil to succeed in their plans with the intent of gaining from it.

Angel is often very reclusive and seemingly very serious-minded.  He is focused on his goal of fighting the world's evils and trying to redeem himself for his past evils.  As a soulless vampire, Angelus is extremely sadistic, taking perverse pleasure in taunting his enemies and hurting all they care about.  To avoid becoming this man again, Angel tries to live a much more disciplined life, but despite this demeanor, he can be surprisingly childish and petty when he feels someone is filling his role or stealing his spotlight, though he tries to brush it off.  Often, he is scene brooding, which becomes a point of mockery for his friends.  Angel is also a huge fan of Barry Manilow, and of singing Barry Manilow, though he is an objectively terrible singer.

Count Orlok

106 Points, 6 Lists, #4 CJones & Kete

Unbiography
Count Orlok (German: Graf Orlok) is the main antagonist and title character portrayed by Max Schreck in the classic 1922 silent film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens. He was based on Bram Stoker's character Count Dracula.

In Nosferatu, Count Orlok is a vampire from Transylvania, and is known as "The Bird of Death", who feasts upon the blood of living humans. He is believed to have been created by Belial, the lieutenant demon of Satan.

Orlok dwells alone in a vast castle hidden among the rugged peaks in a lost corner of the Carpathian Mountains. The castle is swathed in shadows, and is badly neglected with a highly sinister feel to it. He is in league with the housing agent Knock, and wants to purchase a house in Wisborg. Local peasants live in terror of Orlok and never venture out after dark. Thomas Hutter scorns their fears as mere superstition, and ventures to the decrepit castle; however, the coach-driver will not take him over the bridge leading to it. A black-swathed figure in a black coach (Orlok in disguise) drives him the rest of the way. He is greeted by Orlok, who claims that as it is past midnight all his servants have gone to bed, and the two dine together and discuss Orlok's purchasing of a house in the fictional city of Wisborg, Germany. Hutter accidentally cuts his thumb when slicing bread and Orlok is barely able to control himself from drinking from Hutter's wound.

After Hutter collapses in a chair, Orlok feeds off of him, but this is not shown on screen: Hutter discovers two bites on his neck the next day but attributes them to mosquitoes, unaware at this point that his host is actually a vampire.

Hutter only realises the horrific truth later in his chambers after further reading from "The Book of the Vampires", and he discovers that he is trapped in the castle with the Nosferatu. Orlok advances upon Hutter, and Hutter's beloved wife, Ellen, senses through telepathy that her husband's life is in mortal danger; she screams for him and somehow Orlok is powerless to touch him. The next morning Hutter searches the castle, and discovers to his revulsion that Orlok is "sleeping" in the basement in a filthy coffin filled with earth. Hutter then witnesses Orlok loading a cart with several coffins filled with soil, one of which he then hides in and they are driven off to be loaded on to a ship headed for Wisborg. This soil is later revealed to be unhallowed earth from Orlok's own grave; according to "The Book of the Vampires", Nosferatu must sleep by day in the unholy earth from their graves to sustain their power.

On board the ship, he kills every crew member until only the captain and his first mate remain. Later when the first mate goes to the cargo hold to investigate, Count Orlok rises from his coffin, terrifying the first mate who jumps overboard in fear. The captain ties himself to the wheel of the ship and then Count Orlok creeps up on him and kills the captain. His journey by sea spreads plague all over Europe.

Blade

117 Points, 9 Lists, #4 K1 & Stethacantus

Unbiography
Blade is a vampire superhero in the Marvel Universe.  Born in London in 1929, Blade mother was attacked and bitten by the vampire Deacon Frost during his birth.  This passed onto Blade various vampiric powers but lacks the weaknesses that plague so many vampires.  As a boy, he was trained by Jamal Afari how to fight (as well as some musical skills) and began to make a name for himself as an extremely effecient vampire hunter.  He earned the nickname Blade, due to his use of swords and knives.

After Afari was killed by Dracula, Blade went after him, triggering a long-held war between the two.  Eventually he joined a group out to kill Dracula headed by Quincy Harker, a descendant of Jonathan Harker, who had encountered Dracula long ago.  He later joined another group of vampire hunters called the Nightstalkers.  It wasn't long before becoming a solo act once more, though has teamed up with superheroes many times since and even briefly joined the Avengers under the guise of "Ronin."

Blade is a master of many martial arts and of bladed weapons.  We also is a master of unarmed combat and has dedicated his life to vampire hunting and killing strategies.  He also is immune to many traditional vampire weaknesses such as sunlight and holy water.  Blade tends to have a one track mind, often putting his hunt for vampires above all else.  Despite his deep hatred of vampires, he fights to protect the innocent, trying to make sure they don't get in the line of fire.  That said, he has had some morally questionable approaches in the past.  While he tends to view himself as a loner and not a team player, he often ends up teaming up with other heroes, though they are often uneasy alliances.

Barnabas Collins

112 Points, 7 Lists, #2 Fred Garvin

Unbiography
Barnabas Collins is a fictional character, a featured role in the ABC daytime serial Dark Shadows, which aired from 1966 to 1971. Barnabas is a 175-year-old vampire in search of fresh blood and his lost love, Josette. The character, originally played by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid, was introduced in an attempt to resurrect the show's flagging ratings, and was originally to have only a brief 13-week run. He was retained due to his popularity and the program's quick spike in ratings, and became virtually the star of the show.

A defining feature of Barnabas' character development is his gradual but persistent transformation from a frightening creature of the night into the show's protagonist, who selflessly, heroically and repeatedly risks his life to save the Collins family from catastrophe.

Barnabas Collins was a member of the late 18th century Collins family, from the fictional town of Collinsport, Maine. He was the son of Joshua Collins (Louis Edmonds) and Naomi Collins. Barnabas' many cousins included Millicent and Daniel Collins. During the flashback, Barnabas intended to marry an heiress from Martinique named Josette du Pres (Kathryn Leigh Scott), but had a brief affair with Angelique Bouchard (Lara Parker), Josette's maidservant.

Upon Angelique's arrival in Collinsport for the wedding, Barnabas was determined not to resume his affair. The spurned Angelique Bouchard, a practitioner of witchcraft, used a number of spells to manipulate Barnabas and his family and force his agreement to marry her. Barnabas discovered Angelique's duplicity, and shot her. With what she believed to be her dying words, she took revenge on Barnabas by summoning a vampire bat from hell to attack him. Barnabas fell extremely ill and died. Angelique survived and attempted to rescind the curse, but was unsuccessful.

Barnabas shortly thereafter rose as a vampire, and soon strangled Angelique. Collins later frightened his aunt Abigail (Clarice Blackburn) to death, and left the hatefully fanatic witch-hunter Reverend Trask (Jerry Lacy) entombed alive in the Old House basement. Sarah Collins died of pneumonia after a cold night spent hiding in the woods from her deceased brother. Adding to Barnabas' grief, his mother Naomi committed suicide after discovering his secret. Barnabas Collins blamed Angelique for the deaths of both his sister and his mother, and also blamed Lt. Nathan Forbes (Joel Crothers), who had told Naomi about him. Barnabas strangled Forbes, and attempted to transform Josette into a vampire. Josette was willing, if not fully cognizant of what this would entail, until Angelique revealed a vision of what she would become. Fleeing from Barnabas, Josette leapt off the cliffs of Widow's Hill to her death.

Unable to bear what he had become, Barnabas Collins asked his father, Joshua, to destroy him. Joshua Collins was unable to slay his son, and ordered servant Ben Stokes (Thayer David) to nail a cross to the inside lid of Barnabas' coffin and to wrap chains on its outside, forever imprisoning the vampire in a secret room of the family mausoleum at Eagle's Hill Cemetery.

In 1967, while searching the Collins family crypt for their rumored lost jewels, Willie Loomis (John Karlen) stumbled upon the chained coffin in which Barnabas slept. Believing the coffin to contain the Collins family riches, Willie inadvertently released the vampire. Barnabas attacked Willie and turned him into his unwilling servant.

Barnabas Collins introduced himself to the modern Collins family as a cousin from England, a hard-working businessman never seen during the day. The family accepted this story, despite having never before heard of him, because of his resemblance to the portrait of the ancestral Barnabas which hung in Collinwood. The thirsty Barnabas made victims of several Collinsport residents. He was particularly taken with waitress Maggie Evans (Kathryn Leigh Scott), who resembled his long-lost love, Josette. Barnabas was told by David Collins (David Henesy) that Josette's spirit still haunted the Collinwood estate, where it periodically helped and protected others, including young David. Barnabas Collins kidnapped Maggie, hypnotized her to believe that she was Josette, and planned to make her his vampire bride. Maggie escaped with help from the ghost of Sarah Collins, but the emotional distress of being kidnapped caused Maggie to regress to a childlike mentality and to forget all that had happened. Barnabas Collins then targeted David's governess, Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke) as a potential consort. He tried to seduce her away from her fiancé Burke Devlin (Anthony George), and then to bite her. The ghost of Sarah appeared repeatedly throughout and warned Barnabas, who was tormented by a feeling of responsibility for her death, away from evil deeds.

119 Points, 7 Lists, #1 Stethacantus

Unbiography
Count Chocula is the mascot for the Count Chocula cereal.  His cereal was released the same year as Frankenberry, causing the two mascots to constantly argue about who has the better cereal.  The answer is Chocula, by the way.  Also, apparently his first name is Alfred.  Weird.

Sorry, I know the entry is short, but the video below is a half hour of Chocula goodness.

Count von Count

157 Points, 10 Lists, #2 Kete

Unbiography
Count von Count is a mysterious but friendly vampire-like Muppet on Sesame Street who is meant to parody Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Count Dracula. He first appeared on the show in the Season 4 premiere in 1972, counting blocks in a sketch with Bert and Ernie.

The Count has a compulsive love of counting (arithmomania, an affliction of legendary vampires); he will count anything and everything, regardless of size, amount, or how much annoyance he causes others around him. In one song he stated that he sometimes even counts himself. When he finishes counting, The Count laughs and announces his total (which sometimes appears on screen). This finale is usually accompanied by a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning, even on sunny days. (According to The Sesame Street Bedtime Storybook, the Count has a personal cloud that hovers over his head and provides the thunder and lightning.)

Many of the Count's songs, including "Counting Is Wonderful" and "The Batty Bat," are in the style of Roma music.

The Count lives in an old, cobweb-infested castle that he shares with many bats. Sometimes he counts them. Some of the pet bats are named, including Grisha, Misha, Sasha, and Tattiana. He also has a cat, Fatatita, and an octopus named Octavia. He also plays a large pipe organ, and in some illustrations he is seen playing the violin. In recent years, the Count has appeared on each episode to announce the Number of the Day, playing notes on his organ to count up to the featured number.

The Count's most recent girlfriend, Countess von Backwards, is known for counting backwards. The Count also shared a brief romantic tryst with Lady Two. He has a fifth cousin named Countess von Dahling who can make it rain when she counts. His grandparents have appeared on the show, as have his brother and mother in non-speaking bits. He also has an Uncle Uno.

The Count's profile on Sesame Workshop's website does not use the word vampire but does suggest that he may be a distant relative of Count Dracula.  However, the book Sesame Street Unpaved describes the Count as a "Numerical Vampire." In contrast, the 2001 Sesame Street Muppets Drawing Guide insists "The Count is not a vampire."

Nevertheless, the Count resembles Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Dracula in voice (speaking in an Eastern European accent and pronouncing his Vs as Ws), appearance, and sometimes mannerisms. For example, in early sketches, the Count waves his hands to exercise hypnotic power over other Muppets and holds his cape over the lower part of his face while moving. In addition, an early skit revealed that the Count shows no reflection in a mirror. Unlike vampires as traditionally depicted in legend and motion pictures, however, the Count often relaxes in the sunlight (as seen in "Counting Vacation" and "Coconut Counting Man," among others).

The Count also co-hosted the Today Show with Meryl Streep.  First of all, how was this not a permanent deal?  Second, please let me see this.
