It's a terrifying thought, being trapped in a mind that no longer works.

My Dad is getting weaker by the day. Now he can't even stand up. He's lost so much weight he's basically a skeleton with skin. I am absolutely FURIOUS at his doctors. His condition should have been diagnosed and dealt with months ago, but it seems impossible to impress upon these people that he WILL be dead within a month, probably much sooner. It's gotten so bad that it may be too late, even if he got the surgery he needs (or rather needed a month ago), the damage to his body may be too severe to recover from.

Today I overheard him telling my Mom that he'd rather die than go on like this, and that we need to give her power of attorney ASAP.

Tomorrow he goes in to have the test to confirm the diagnosis of the thing we already know he has, Achalasia. I have no idea how we're going to get him into the car. Not that it matters because we also found out today that John's Hopkins can't even take him to do the surgery. And he likely wouldn't survive the trip anyway.

This is a nightmare.

So sorry to hear what you and your family are going through CJ.
Not sure there is a good way to go and while my mother was far too young at age 65 to die when she did 5 years ago, I kind of hope I go the same way (although hope it's not at 65)- no prolonged illness- just go to sleep and dont wake up.
(She did actually have a prolonged illness, but it was not a life threatening illness- I blame the drugs she was on).

My dad has refused any more life support. He just wants to die now. He seemed to be doing so much better earlier today, then I got a call that he's crashing and that I should return ASAP.

I can understand his reasoning. The alternative is a tracheotomy, a feeding tube, and nursing home care. Nobody deserves that hell.

Happy Birthday to me  :'( :'( :'(

Things are really hard now, I know.  I hope you can see your father before he goes.

My Dad died this morning, around 9am. The last time I saw him alive, he was catatonic on Morphine. That was yesterday.

In a way, I'm glad for him. He spent his whole life in pain, and to finally escape that pain is a blessing  :'(
