i still hope that there is a nice big chasm for kylo ren to fall into in ep 9
Seeing as how both Kylo Ren and Rey were almost swallowed by a chasm in TFA that would be quite ironic.

This movie is such a failure. It has made $0 at the box office.

Now that TLJ opened JJ's dumb mystery box and showed everybody it was empty, will JJ try to use the mystery box again in the third act? Probably not, but I'm not sure he can write anything without that crutch.

I guess what I'd like to know is, did Rian undermine JJ's story, or was the hyping up and subsequent abandonment of classic Star Wars tropes planned to be this trilogy's point from the beginning?

Personally, I prefer Rian's direction, and I fear JJ may try to steer the whole thing back the other way.

Considering JJ is still the Executive Producer and stuff still needs to go through Kathleen and the higher-ups, I think the first one is highly unlikely.

Based on everything we've seen, I don't think there is a clear overall direction to this trilogy.

I'm hoping JJ doesn't do any mystery box stuff for IX so that we at least get a definitive end to this trilogy. We all know they are going to continue to make Star Wars movies, we don't need dangling plot threads to entice us to go see them.

The mystery box always ends in public derision. It's not possible to open the box and have a satisfying conclusion. The whole point is the mystery. Once the mystery is gone, it's mundane. But that's the paradox...people demand that it be opened. Either they're pissed that the mystery isn't solved, or they're pissed that it didn't meet expectations. I think the only way out is to say that there never was a mystery.

You know guys, Maz Kanata in TFA very clearly said that who Rey is waiting for is never coming back. So in my mind the mystery of Rey's parentage was already ended.

If Rian Johnson is doing the entire trilogy instead of just one entry I think they will fit together better.

I'm sure it'll be as a force ghost. I'd like to see a flashback so we learn why he was able to turn Kylo Ren away from Luke, but at this point I don't think we'll even get that.
