Isn't the quality of the story largely dependent on the screenwriting?  The director and the actors just breathe life into words.

They are all important pieces that make up the whole.  Screenwriting is one of the ingredients, but the director is the chef.  Or maybe the screenwriting is the recipe, and the director is the oven?  The producers are the tomatoes.....I don't know.  I'm hungry.
The director as chef is a pretty good analogy. The script is the recipe. And the rest like actors and effects are the ingredients. Any one of those things could be bad and regardless of the qualities of the other two the end result would be bad.

But sometimes a really good cook can make something really good out of bad ingredients.

Yes, but that something is not what was intended per the recipe. So he's not really following the recipe either.

He's writing it as well.

Don't know anything about Trevorrow, but I'd prefer pretty much anyone to JJ.

Oh.  That definitely changes things.

I kind of hate J.J. Abrams for indirectly making the television adaptation of Under the Dome so terrible.  Abrams rose to prominence by creating the hugely successful series Lost.  CBS purchased the rights to adapt Stephen King's Under the Dome, then promptly turned it into a meandering, terrible knockoff of Lost.  Abrams was not involved in Under the Dome, but he did make CBS desperately want their own version of Lost.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

Paramount gave us all the Transformers sequels. They think I'll be giving them any sympathy???? As Edna Krabappel would say... "HA!".

It doesn't really bother me all that much that I somehow turned this from a Star Wars into a Simpsons thread.  ;D

I also seem to remember a cover of the old magazine "Star Wars Insider" where on the cover Bart was dressed as Luke and Homer looked like Darth Vader and they were fighting with lightsabers. God that was ages ago. Also I seem to remember a short animated skit were Bart was a pilot in the X-wing.

I'm sure it'll probably be something that feels and looks a lot like classic star wars and I'm sure a lot of fans will again complain about that but they'll get over it.
