Isn't the quality of the story largely dependent on the screenwriting? The director and the actors just breathe life into words.

I kind of hate J.J. Abrams for indirectly making the television adaptation of Under the Dome so terrible. Abrams rose to prominence by creating the hugely successful series Lost. CBS purchased the rights to adapt Stephen King's Under the Dome, then promptly turned it into a meandering, terrible knockoff of Lost. Abrams was not involved in Under the Dome, but he did make CBS desperately want their own version of Lost.
