So why is it the people who don't care crying about a movie not getting nominated?

I, of course, don't mean literally. But if you follow oscar talk at all, you will see plenty of crying.

Do you actually care about the Oscars though?

Traditionally my wife and I try to watch every movie nominated and take the day off work and watch it.

It is something that I greatly look forward to in the year.

Do I agree with the choices? No. But I great enjoy the Oscars.

Yeah, I'm right there with you.  I love movies and the Oscars is the Super Bowl for movies.  I don't remember the last time my favorite movie of the year won the Oscar, and they often make ridiculous nominations (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for Best Picture, I'm still amazed that that happened), but I do enjoy the Oscars a lot.

I like the dialogue Oscars opens up. It gets people talking about the art of film, which is always an important discussion to keep alive. And it gets movies that nobody's ever heard of into the public eye. Can't count the number of times I've heard, "I've never even HEARD of any of these." And most of the time, people have heard of them now.

It's not a useful way to determine THE BEST MOVIE. I don't think anything is. But it's a useful way to keep some integrity going amongst the Paul Blarts and Pixels of the world.
