I think all in all it's better to find people who have similar tastes as you do and listen to their recommendations on what you might like.  I for one absolutely hate Napoleon Dynamite and everyone and there brother seems to love this one.  The people who I trust on movie recommendations were split on this one, I just came down on the dislike side.  As far as consensus picks as a whole keep in mind that the most watched show on television was at one point Baywatch and when it lost that title it went to Xena Warrior Princess.  I have no faith whatsoever in consensus picks anymore.

People who are willing to apologize and make justifications for movies they have absolutely no vested interest in, (other than being a 'fan') is one of the most bewildering things on the internet to me.  If you could create some sort of weighted scale of movie quality where you took into consideration what was available to the creators of the prequels in terms of money, technology, available talent, people being willing to participate, etc, the prequels would be by far the worst movies on the list.  I hadn't seen Ep II since it came out in the theater, and I realized that I remembered nothing about it, (other than the yoda fight and the sand scene), and that the general impression of "better than Ep I" was just me doing a bit of the above justification to myself.  Never again!!

Ok, you make a good point here with the making justifications for the movie thing... but come on, removing Jake Lloyd and almost all Jar Jar content makes Episode 2 better than the first just by subtraction. Sure, they are both shit but there is a difference between your standard unpleasant shit and the shit that makes your eyes water and gag reflex kick in when you catch a whiff...

So the Ewoks were also shallow racial caricatures? Great.

I myself would not be pleased to have my people portrayed by small, ineffectual looking teddy bears. Especially my people are as fucking scary as Filipinos.

(I mean scary in a good, badass way.)

Out of the 6 star wars films, the only one I don't like is Ep 1.  I think Ep 2 & 3 are enjoyable sci-fi fluff, so long as you turn a blind eye to Hayden's performances and the "romantic" dialogue scenes (not easy to do, I admit).

Yeah don't mess with the family.....

Catholic witch doctor makes perfect sense.  The early Roman chruch merged with many pagan traditions all over the world.  As AmandaGal once pointed out, Wicca seemed very Catholic to her, and of course that comes from the merging of British Isles paganism with Rome, Santeria is African Voodoo and Roman Church merged, as they conquered indigineous peoples, their two religions were kind squished together...

Something like that... but what the hell do I know...?

Carry on...

Quite the contrary! The little tree-living tribal folk take on the stronger WHITE-armored imperialists and kick their asses using stones and logs =) I see this as a point of pride really!

I find no shame in the truth.... when Lapu Lapu saw ships with huge sails landing in his territory, he hurriedly ran a group of guerillas over to the invaders and beheaded them -- did they eat the invaders in a cermonial way? I can only speculate but I assume they did..... The Ewoks are paying homage to my people the way I see it =)

Yes, but when the Ewoks did it, it looked really lame. Imagine if it had been Wookies instead, is what I'm saying. Because really, Wookies and Filipinos are alike in that they are both cool and I would not screw with them.

(Interesting side note: if I recall correctly, the .45 sidearm was made standard issue because previous military handguns were too weak to kill people in the Philippines. Does this sound like a characteristic of a.) an Ewok or b.) a Wookie?)

Yeah lol -- Filipinos would charge into battle covered in special drugs which had the same effects as Cocaine and PCP so that if a hole was ripepd in their flesh, the drug would just numb them and make them go crazier. That, combined with this "special" root that they would chew all throughout the battle made Flips a rather psycho enemy that could barely be knocked down.

Enter the Colt .45 -- the gun was specifically made during the Spanish-American War so that soldiers could actually knock Flips down in close-quarter combat. The theory being that if you knocked a Flip down, that would be the only way to ensure they wouldn't get back up.

Now admittedly, the Wookies fit that image better than Ewoks do lol, but I guess the issue Lucas had was the sad realism that wookie-actors are in short supply, whereas little children that can dress as tiny bears are all over the place =P

Wow, then I've totally being seen the Ewok/Storm Trooper battle the wrong way.

See, I thought it had something to do with high technology and tall armored chaps vs primative teddy bears who fight with stones and wear leather. Sort of like Lord of the Rings type of thing.....Progress vs Nature.

On the subject of the prequels, I hated Phantom Menace with all my being, but I liked Attack of the Clones okay and the third one quite a bit. Phantom Menace was too silly and horribly acted to be considered a classic. By the second one, I was thinking it couldn't get any worse and it didn't, thankfully. Jar Jar was seen less, Jake Lloyd was gone and Hayden's a little easier on the eyes. I've never been able to see Portman clicking with the SWs universe. Her style of acting just doesn't belong, but it's tolerable by the third film.

And Pak suffered a massive head injury at the circus as a child which is why he likes the prequels. He just doesn't remember the incident because it was too traumatic.
