Guitar Hero Live
« on: April 14, 2015, 10:07:13 AM »
Well, after a 5 year long break, Guitar Hero is returning. (And no, this probably wasn't a "Rock Band 4 is coming out, so we better toss together a game too" thing. It takes a good bit of time to start making a game, so I suspect Activision has been working on this for probably a year.)

So, what makes this one different? Two things- a "music video" mode where the video plays in the background and the guitar bits play over the video, ala Singstar. From some of the articles, it seems like these might be stored on a central server and might run in a Spotify-ish "You don't own this song, but can play it when online" type deal.

Then there's the "Live" part where instead of the traditional "watch your rock avatar play the song" mode, you're instead in first person view and get to look out at the audience and see them react. Play well it's "Wooos!" Play badly and it's "Booos." All in full motion video.

Finally, they've changed the layout. No more multi-colored notes on the lane, it's all in black and white. Plus, the controller has been redesigned so instead of a five button controller, it's now six. And I'm sure that won't screw up every returning player to the series.

Me? It looks interesting. It's certainly distinct from Rock Band now. Both games will look different and with the different controller, both will play different too. But, at the same time, I'm not happy about having to have two distinct guitar controllers to play both games. Nor am I happy about the online aspect to access songs as I like to keep my consoles offline. But that's just me. But I think the real aspect that I'm concerned with is this:

Yeah, my bandmates in the old game were cartoony. But they were my band mates. Purple haired drummer girl with glasses felt like a friend on stage. Now I'm stuck playing alongside, well, that guy.  And I suspect that won't be as much fun. We'll see.

And my hopes that I wouldn't have to spend much on video games this fall seem to have flown right out the window between this, RB4 and Dimensions. Curse you, game industry!

I don't know how much bad acting I could take. The TV aspect seems pretty cool though. The new layout of the guitars seems interesting too.

Yeah the divergent instruments is probably the biggest downside here. But it's something I wouldn't mind playing once to see the goofy live action video.

well with 6 butttons it was never going to be backwards compatible on the instruments.  I feel RB is trying to race GH to market.

Maybe.  But just having all the old tracks on RB & GH not having them kinda made up my mind pretty easily on which way I'm heading.
