The Riffis! Back to Best Actor for a second (Poll)
« on: March 05, 2015, 10:34:57 AM »
Ok, so during Oscar season, there was talk of looking back on Oscar nominations from years past and, with the help of several years worth of hindsight, determining which movies, actors, and directors should have been honored.

This is the suggestion I am talking about:
Someone somewhere suggested that the best way to do the Oscars would be a decade or more after the year in question. Picture if the Academy was right now deciding what was really "Best Picture" of 2000. Would it still go the Gladiator?

Memorial Oscar Snubs include:
Al Pacino did NOT win for Dog Day Afternoon
Tom Hanks DID win for Forrest Gump
John Malkovich did NOT win for Being John Malkovich
Michael Keaton did NOT win for Birdman
Pixar movies have NOT won best picture--Ever

So, I am trying to gather some interest. Please let me know if you would like to participate.

Also, feel free to suggest a better name (pronounced Riffees)

Also, suggest what year we should start with. :)

I hope you guys want to do this. I think it will be tons of fun!

I'd be down. However I gripe and whine about dog-and-pony awards shows, that doesn't mean I never like to throw my hat into the ring.

Also, I like the name, although having finally watched Rififi last night (good stuff), I did a double-take when I first saw the thread title here.

So, here is how I am planning on doing this.

We will pick a year. Let's start simple with the movies that came out in 1999. Then we start.

Round 1:
Select your nominees. Post your top 5 choices for each of the following categories:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
(We can do more if you want)

Anyway, once we all get our choices, we vote for our picks.

Just for more inspiration, these were the winners for the year 1999:
Best Picture
American Beauty (winner)
The Cider House Rules
The Green Mile
The Insider
The Sixth Sense

Other films that came out in 1999 (and WEREN'T nominated for best picture
Being John Malkovich
The Boondock Saints
Dogma
Election
Fight Club

See why the awards need to be redone!!!!! Ok, hope more people want to do this :)

I get the other three, but I don't think a lack of nomination for Dogma and the Boondock Saints are the Oscar's biggest losses.

So are we supposed to PM you or just post our five nominees?

That is the fun of the Riffis. I think Dogma wouldn't be good for Best Picture, but best screenplay maybe.

But those were just some of the movies that came out. I, personally, will probably still have American Beauty in my nominees.

As for your other questions, I am fine either way. I think I would prefer we post them so we can discuss the options. Also, I have no idea how much overlap there will be.

But I am open to suggestions.

Do we have to nominate Oscar-y movies, or can I nominate Wing Commander if I feel like it? (I don't!)

I think her recommendation of Dogma and Boondock Saints speaks for itself.  I think the idea is what has stood the test of time/what is just plain good as opposed to what is "Oscar bait".

1999 was a pretty good year for film.  Some strong interesting stuff.

I'm immediately taking it too seriously, but I do see quite a few movies I wish I had seen and a few that I'd like to rewatch. Gonna compose a temp list, but might revisit some of these.

When are you moving on to round two?
FINE

It's ...an experience, I've seen it about 3 times and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

So it's 5 per category?

Is there an official rule (from the Academy, I mean) as to what constitutes a supporting or a leading role?

I feel like if anyone has lead roles in Magnolia, it's John C Riely and Julianne Moore, but maybe EVERYONE in that movie is considered supporting roles?
