LoC 82- Top 51 Simpsons Characters
« on: November 05, 2014, 05:37:30 PM »

Hello,  I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such forum lists as “Top 50 Episodes of Fish” and “Metric Systempalooza! Top 50 Metric System Units of Measurement!” Last month, forum members were asked to submit a list of their favorite characters from the town of Springfield, which would then be compiled into a top 50 list in a timely and competent manner.

That plan failed magnificently.

Instead, we bring you this hastily compiled and many weeks late list. Enjoy!

First Appearance:
Carl- “Homers Night Out” Season 1, Ep 10

Number 47: Mona Simpson

15 Points
(1 of 10 lists. Highest ranking #11 by Anais)

Biography:
Penelope Mona Simpson (née Olsen) was the mother of Homer Simpson, the wife of Abraham Simpson, the mother-in-law of Marge Simpson and the paternal grandmother of Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson.

Many of the details of Mona's life are unknown, but various pieces of her story have been revealed. Mona was first mentioned in season one and made two brief flashback appearances, but her first major appearance was in "Mother Simpson". In the episode, it is revealed that in the 1960s, Mona was a homemaker who lived with her husband Abraham Simpson and Homer, who at the time was a child. She became caught up in the hippie movement after her beliefs were ignited by seeing Joe Namath's long hair during Super Bowl III.

Mona soon after became a political activist and, at one event, Mona and a group of other activists protesting germ research entered Montgomery Burns's laboratory and destroyed all the biological warfare experiments. As the gang escaped, she stayed behind to help a fallen Burns, who in turn, swore to have her thrown in jail for the rest of her life. Since that night, Mona was forced to leave her family. Abe lied and said Mona had died while Homer was at the movies, in order to spare him of the trauma that his mother was a wanted criminal. For 27 years, Homer presumed that his mother was dead. He was accidentally reunited with Mona in "Mother Simpson" after he faked his own death to get a day off from work and Mona visited his supposed grave site. Overjoyed at their reunion, he brings Mona home to meet his family. At first, Mona does not reveal her whereabouts and spends time catching up with her family, but is forced to reveal her past. She later travels to the post office with Homer, where Mr. Burns recognizes her face and tracks her down with FBI assistance. However, a tip-off to Homer from Chief Wiggum allows Mona to escape. Wiggum is grateful to Mona because his asthma was cured by the "antibiotic bomb" her group detonated during their lab infiltration, thereby allowing him to join the police force. Forced to go on the run again, Mona tells Homer she loves him and escapes to the underground.

Voiced By:
Maggie Roswell/ Glenn Close/Tress MacNeille/ Pamela Hayden

First Appearance:
“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” - Season 2, Episode 15

Notes:
Mona is currently deceased, but her last appearance was in an “Inception” dream sequence revolving around Homer feeling guilt that he had caused his parents to break up due to a mishap that he had caused. She assured Homer that it was not the case.

(2 of 10 lists. Highest ranking #16 by Cole Stratton)

Biography:
Nelson Muntz is the main bully in The Simpsons. He also has a tendency to show up at various places and laugh.

Nelson's bullying seems to be caused by his broken home life. He lives in a dilapidated house, with a missing dad and a drunken adult entertainer for a mom.

He has been romantically linked to Lisa Simpson and, for a brief time, was adopted by Marge Simpson. And while he's often bullied Bart, he's also been quite friendly to Bart at other times, such as the trip to the World’s Fair.

“Bart the General” - Season 1, Episode 5

Notes:
Nelson is one of the three characters on the Simpsons used to remember the death of Marcia Wallace.

I'm surprised Agnes didn't get a few more votes, I think mommy dearest is a crack up

and I'm pleasantly surprised Shary made the grade. That was one of my favorite episodes, and I love side characters like her, even more than many of the regulars. They show up briefly but leave a lasting impression

Number 40: Itchy & Scratchy

21 Points
(2 of 10 lists. Highest ranking #13 by Cole Stratton)

Biography:
In 1920, Chester Lampwick created the character of Itchy, who was then plagarized a year later by Roger Meyers, Sr.  and paired with the cartoon cat Scratchy for a long running series of violent cartoons.

Over the years, the duo have appeared in several feature films (Pinitchio, Scratchtasia, Itchy & Scratchy Meet Fritz the Cat, The Itchy and Scratchy Movie) as well as a short lived “Itchy and Scratchy and Friends Hour.”

Voiced By:
Dan Castenella, Nancy Cartwright (Itchy)/ Harry Shearer, Nancy Cartwright (Scratchy)

First Appearance:
“There's No Disgrace Like Home” - Season 1, Episode 4/ “The Bart Simpson Show” - Tracy Ullman Show

Notes:
Itchy and Scratchy episodes are sometimes added to the show to pad out the running time. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.

The duo are also responsible for the “Worst. Episode. Ever.” quote that still floats around to this day.

FYI- Google searching for “itchy” provides a rather... interesting list of suggestions.
