The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:22:45 AM »
So, I know there are other Isaac players here and I thought I'd start a thread for Rebirth, seeing as it is about 10 hours away from releasing.  Apparently, there will be pre-release live streams from Northernlion, CobaltStreak and Bisnap at 10 AM Eastern time (3 hours before release).

I don't think I can remember a game I've been this hyped for for so long.  I kind of can't believe it's coming out in a few hours.

Ooooooo!!  I knew something I loved was being released on my birthday, but I couldn't remember what it was!  If only I had more time to play it.

I'm stuck here in Alabama with nothing but my father's laptop. I don't know why, but it is infuriatingly slow. And it's only about 5 years old. I just tried playing Rebirth, and certain rooms would run just fine, while others would run at half speed. And there seemed to be no rhyme or reason for it. I guess I'm going to have to virus/malware scan the hell out of it, then unload all the extraneous crap he's go on it.

Six weeks before I can get back to my own computer  :grr:

That sucks!  I wish they had some options to turn some of the lighting effects off.  I know they said they had to turn some of that off for the Vita version.  I don't know if that would help your situation, but it would be nice if it was possible to try.

Runs have been good so far, getting some unlocks.  Beat Mom twice (once on a seeded run that didn't count for unlocks) but got murdered by a horrible double boss on my first trip to the Womb.  Weirdest new thing so far has been a room requiring two keys.  I'm still not sure what the hell happened in there, but I came out really OP with a bunch of items I never picked up.

I just finished my first run. Tammy's Head plus Brimstone is seriously overpowered. I could clear most rooms in one shot, and I utterly slaughtered Mom.

New items I got:
Contract from Below - Apparently doubles the drop for clearing a room
Cursed Eye - Sort of like Chocolate Milk, you charge it and shoot out up to four tears at once
Lil Haunt - Basically lvl 3 Meatboy
Lost Contact - It said shielded shots, but I already had Brimstone by then, so I have no idea what that meant

Saw one shop item I didn't recognize, but I couldn't afford it.

Whew, a game!

I thought the old forum member Isaac was reborn.

I have no idea who that is, and I'm guessing I don't want to know.

Someone on the Steam forum suggested changing the MaxRenderScale in the .ini file to 1 to fix the slowdown issue. That helped a lot. Then I changed it back to 2, and it still runs fine, except when there's a Brimstone effect on screen. Weird. On the downside, the game is way harder at full speed. After my initial win, I've died three times in a row.

Some more new items:
Anti-Gravity - This is clever. You hold down the fire button and your tears stay in place until you let go
E Coli - Getting hit can make you poop

I also love some of the item descriptions:
"Yay, Cancer!"
"Become a temporary badass" (My Little Pony)

Oh I don't know, I think all of us that lived through Isaac's time were richer for the experience in the end.  May not have seemed like it at the time.

That said, never heard of this game, but just reading what you're describing is making me want to try it.

I loved the original BoI, especially with its expansion.  The new one looks good too, but I'm going to hold off on it for now.  I've got way too many games in my library as it is, and I play BoI too much for me to restart on the new one right now.

It's super good but you need to have patience as it is very punishing and luck is a huge factor.  The original is one of my favorite games of all time and, from what I've played thus far, this is just a huge improvement on it in pretty much every way.

Yeah, I have over 200 hours logged on the original game. The only other games that even come close to 100 (according to Steam) are FTL and Civ V.

Got my first Satan win last night. Dark Bum, or whatever it's called, is a bit too good I think. Also, Gemini rips through bosses like tissue paper.

(Looks at Civ V stats. Notes that it's well into 4 digits of time.)

I'm waiting for BoilR to start back up myself. I don't enjoy the game as much as others here do, but I do enjoy watching the races.

I've now made more progress on the PSN version (made it to the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.)  It's pretty awesome to kick back on the couch for a marathon Isaac session, and the controls are great.  Only problem is that cross save seems to be broken right now, so my Vita save is way behind my PS4 save.  Hopefully they get that fixed soon, otherwise I'll probably just use the Vita version for seeded runs.

Saw a couple of new bosses I've never seen before today. The Adversary, who has homing Brimstone. Yes, that's as obnoxious as it sounds. And Mama Gurdy, who killed me pretty quick.
