4(Tie) John McClane  - 83 points
(5 of 11 lists. Highest ranking - #1 Cole

The Wiki:
John McClane is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Die Hard film series. He is portrayed by Bruce Willis. He is known for his sardonic one-liners, including the famous catchphrase "Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker". John McClane was originally based on the fictional character Detective Joe Leland from Roderick Thorp's bestselling novel, Nothing Lasts Forever, along with another character, Frank Malone from Walter Wager's novel 58 Minutes (later adapted as Die Hard 2) and is somewhat based on and inspired by Dirty Harry.
Die Hard villain Hans Gruber describes him as "just another American.... who thinks he's John Wayne,"[1] to which McClane replies that he "was always partial to Roy Rogers."[2] He is described as being a foul-mouthed, wisecracking, no-nonsense New York cop with an itchy trigger finger and a never-say-die maverick spirit.

  • I crap bigger than this movie.
I would post my list, but I seem to have misplaced it. Ah well, I know Agent Dale Cooper was number one for me, Agent Fox Mulder was number 2 and Agent Dana Scully was number 3.

I also had Mitchell in there somewhere. Did Mitchell not make the final list? If not, what a crime.
You know, if the space man puma thing turns out to be the correct religion, I for one will be very surprised.

Mitchell almost made my list, but there were a bunch of guys I had to leave off.  Here's my final list.

1. Marge Gunderson
2. Nick Angel
3. Commissioner Jim Gordon
4. FBI Agent Dale Cooper
5. Inspector Clouseau
6. Robocop
7. John McClane

8. Gene Hunt (Life on Mars) (If you've never seen the show, watch it!)
9. Terence McDonagh (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans) (Great movie.  Weird that the studio tried to bill it as a Bad Lieutenant movie though)
10. Inspector Zenigata (Lupin the 3rd) (Yeah, he never catches Lupin for long, but he's still a much better cop than you might think.  His greatest appearance, which goes for all Lupin characters, is Castle of Cogliastro.
11. Inspector Gadget
12. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (No Country For Old Men)
13. Danny Butterfield
14. Chief Clancy Wiggum
15. Axe Cop
16. Harvey Bullock

17. Joe Pi (If you've never read Top Ten, it's probably Alan Moore's funnest and most underrated comic)
18. Boy (the Invisibles) (Another great comic book cop and, sadly, one of the few non-white, non-male cops on my list, as Renee Montoya got shut out in the end).
19. John Garber (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three) (Possibly my favourite final shot in any movie)
20. Barney Fife
21. Cosgrove (Freakazoid)

22. COPS (Kids in the Hall)
