Jim Irsay arrested for DUI, possession of controlled substance
March 17, 2014, 8:17 AM EDT

Colts owner Jim Irsay has been arrested in Carmel, Indiana on multiple charges.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Irsay faces preliminary charges of “operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance.”  Bond has been set at $22,500.

Irsay is the first NFL owner to face criminal charges since Eddie DeBartolo relinquished control of the 49ers when it was learned that he was facing an indictment on federal racketeering charges in 1997.  In 1998, DeBartolo pleaded guilty to failure to report a felony in connection with money allegedly paid to former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards to procure a riverboat gambling license.

The NFL routinely imposes discipline on players and non-players who are convicted of or plead guilty to DUI charges.  To have any credibility when punishing non-owners for such offenses, the NFL must be willing to impose discipline on owners, too.

When players are arrested for drunk driving, one of the arguments raised is that they can afford to pay for a ride home.  With a net worth of $1.6 billion, Irsay definitely can.

A lot of key players are jumping ship in Carolina and we're not happy about it!

Franchise Turmoil? What Is Going on Within the Carolina Panthers Organization?

Mar 16, 2014

This is the time of year where sports fans are preparing for March Madness. However, the madness is taking on a whole new meaning for the Carolina Panthers. The NFL free agency period is nearly a week old and the only notable signing has been safety Roman Harper. Aside from making under-the-radar deals with backup quarterback Derek Anderson and tight end Mike McNeil, the 2014 offseason has been very quiet for a team that appears to be losing players rather than gaining them.

After Brandon LaFell signed with the New England Patriots on Saturday, Carolina is now without any wide receiver who caught a pass from Cam Newton in 2013. In fact, the only player on the current roster to have a reception is Kealoha Pilares. He only has two catches for 42 yards after 20 professional games.

The lack of offensive weapons has even drawn the attention of running back DeAngelo Williams, who made an interesting quip about him and teammate Jonathan Stewart concerning their fantasy football value.

Captain Munnelyn is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

General manager Dave Gettleman has caught the ire of the Carolina fanbase, which is becoming increasingly impatient with each passing day. It's hard to blame them. After one week, the Panthers have failed to resign any of their key players from last season. Captain Munnerlyn, Mike Mitchell, Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn, Jr. and Domenik Hixon have all signed elsewhere.

Until recently, it appeared their departures for new teams were a product of earning more money than they would from the cash-strapped Panthers. Now, it seems like there is something going on in Carolina that is not sitting well with the players.

The tweet has since been deleted, but Doug Baldwin's question to Munnerlyn and his subsequent answer should raise both eyebrows and concerns among the Carolina fans.

What is going on in the organization?

Is it possible that Gettleman has created an environment within the team that is producing negative vibes with players on the team and the free agent market? It seems plausible, especially when it seemed that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks would sign with the Panthers only to sign with Indianapolis because they were a “better fit."

ESPN's David Newton highlighted multiple gaffes made by the general manager so far this offseason. The list is less than complimentary, although he does offer some insight as to why such moves were made or in this case not made.

Let's not forget that Gettleman is responsible for the unceremonious departure of the team's all-time receiving leader, Steve Smith. Now, the Panthers are in a position where they will have to make the most out of what is left in the market. Thus far, early observations suggest that Gettleman's gamble on this year's market has failed.

Carolina needs at least two veteran wide receivers and a veteran offensive tackle. The need for the former should have the front office targeting James Jones, but if he is unable to be brought in, the Panthers are going to be in trouble.

It's one thing to rebuild a team with players who can make an impact out of college. However, it helps to have a veteran presence to help mentor and mold them into contributing players. Carolina lacks that kind of leadership. Regardless of who is drafted, it's unlikely the team can be successful on just the strength of the defense.

The environment Gettleman seems to be creating is one that will be a trial-by-fire for the incoming rookies.

If there is turmoil inside the Carolina franchise, what will that mean for the future of Cam Newton? On one hand, he has said all the right things and put fans at ease about his future with the team. Then again, Munnerlyn said the same thing and he is now with Minnesota.

Could the atmosphere Gettleman is creating really be bad enough to force Newton out of town? He has yet to sign an extension and the team does hold an option for a fifth year. What happens after the 2015 season? To lose a gifted quarterback like Newton would only set the Panthers back and it could ultimately cost some people their jobs.

Those jobs, of course, are in the front office.

Owner Jerry Richardson has been very quiet on his team's offseason strategy, but an explanation may be needed to explain the actions of his general manager. Those most interested are the personal seat license (PSL) holders.

It's not surprising to see an exodus of players for other teams or even more money. The success and contributions made during a 12-4 run will do that. However, what is taking place in Carolina seems to be unprecedented.

Carolina cannot afford to lose appeal to free agents (although an argument can be made that it has) the rest of the way. The same goes for current players on the team. But, if Gettleman's way of doing things causes the team to implode, he will most certainly be out of a job.

There is little doubt the Carolina Panthers are being beat in the market. But if they continue at the current pace, the team will be beat on the field as well.  Unfortunately, all that can be done is to sit and wait to see what happens.

Spikes, Talib say Patriots file false injury reports
NBC Sports March 19, 2014, 7:01 AM EDT

Two former Patriots say the team put false information about them on official injury reports.

Brandon Spikes and Aqib Talib have both said since leaving New England in free agency that when they were on the Patriots last year, the team gave them injury designations that weren’t accurate. Spikes ended last season on injured reserve with a knee injury, and there were reports that Patriots coach Bill Belichick actually put Spikes on IR because Spikes had shown up late to practice. Spikes seemed to confirm that in an interview on WGR in Buffalo.

“I heard they put me on IR and stuff like that. That was just a false report,” Spikes said, via ESPN.com. “That’s just how things go there. Almost like what happened with Talib and his hip.”

Talib was on injury reports last season with hip injuries, but after signing with the Broncos he said he never had a hip injury.

“The Patriots have their way of reporting stuff, but I haven’t had a hip problem since Tampa,” Talib said. “The injury I had was actually a quad injury. It was reported as a hip injury, but that’s how they do things.”

That’s not how the NFL wants teams to do things. The league office may look into the possibility that the Patriots are playing fast and loose with injury reports.

Panthers sign CB Cason, WR Underwood

Posted 1 hour ago

CHARLOTTE – The Panthers have again added to their secondary and receiving corps, signing cornerback Antoine Cason to a one-year deal and wide receiver Tiquan Underwood to a two-year deal.

"These are players who have an opportunity to play a role with our football team," said head coach Ron Rivera. "I have experience with Antoine and look forward to working with him again. Tiquan has the kind of speed that helps any team and has shown good progress as a receiver."

Cason spent the 2013 season with the Arizona Cardinals, playing in all 16 games. Cason, who has never missed a game in his six-year career, finished the season with eight tackles, two passes defensed and two interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Prior to his one-year stint with the Cardinals, Cason played five years with the San Diego Chargers – the team that drafted him with the 27th overall pick in 2008.

Cason started four games his first two seasons before becoming a full-time starter from 2010-12. In those three years, Cason notched eight interceptions and 38 passes defensed.

While with San Diego, Cason worked with Rivera and Panthers secondary/passing defense coordinator Steve Wilks. Rivera was the Chargers' defensive coordinator from 2008-10, and Wilks oversaw the Chargers’ secondary from 2009-11.

Underwood comes to Carolina after spending the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2013, Underwood played in 12 games with a career-high seven starts. He made 24 catches, setting career-highs in receiving yards (440), average per catch (18.3 yards) and touchdowns (4). Underwood averaged 40 yards per touchdown reception, with three of the four touchdowns coming from 20 or more yards. His career-long 85-yarder at Detroit was the third-longest touchdown catch in the NFL last season.

Underwood was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played two seasons for Jacksonville before joining the New England Patriots for one season in 2011. For his career, Underwood has played in 45 games with 10 starts, 63 receptions, 1,006 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

You're not kidding. It was the lead story on all the local newscasts. I was the perfect age for those teams (11-15) and still have a replica jersey of his hanging in my closet. This is all coming off of a heartbreaking post from his wife on her blog that was posted on Saturday. Worth a read.
