Any references to stuff in the classic series, or this is all just fanwanking for the new Doctors?

You mean, was there any fanwanking for the old Doctors? Yes.

I guess I'm the only one who thought tossing Billie Piper in it was a bit forced.  But I'm a female and I don't think she's cute.  That was really my only complaint, besides Clara not having that big of a role.  I think Smith's doctor cares for Clara as much as Tennant's Doctor cared for Rose, yet for this to be close to the last time they interact, it was kind of nothing.

John Hurt was supposed to be Hartnell's Doctor?  How did I miss that?  It makes sense now and I hope it's true.   The one thing that was bothering me was that there was a whole John Hurt incarnation we knew nothing about!!

But one of the only things that Doctor will remember after he regenerates will be "Bad Wolf" ... which drives pretty much the whole of Ecclestone's season, doesn't it? So she was pretty well needed to bring that back around and give him a reason to by looking for the Bad Wolf stuff.

I thought it would have been forced if it had actually BEEN Rose, and they had tried to find a way to work the actual character back into it.

Where are people getting this.  We see McGann turn into Hurt.  And we would have seen Hurt turn into Eccleston if Eccleston hadn't been a dick.

Actually, there are some rumors from production that the War Doctor would have been Eccleston's Doctor and they had to redo it after Eccleston said no and they came up with the idea for Hurt.

I THINK (...think....) that people got that from when some reviewer was comparing this to The Three Doctors, and using it as an analogy.... like "Hartnell : Hurt" "Troughton : Tennant" "Pertwee : Smith"  ....meaning that Hurt was the old guy wondering how he ended up as "the clown and the dandy" in his future selves.....

...and then some morons took it literally and somehow got it into their heads that they were one and the same.... somehow.... I really don't see how anyone could get confused that much unless they hadn't watched it.

And that wouldn't make much sense for the story... especially considering we saw Eccleston almost IMMEDIATELY after regeneration at the start of series 1 (2005).  When would this War Doctor part have come in?? Unless he regenerated into the exact same look.... which still wouldn't explain his astonishment over how he looked now.

I kind of get the feeling that Moffat wants to dispel the 12 regens ASAP. He keeps pointing them out (I read something that he is counting Tennant's doctor's partial regen as one, which I think is a crock.  But if he is, with Hurt thrown in, we're there).  I just get the feeling he has an idea and wants to use it before he leaves the series.  I don't think Eccleston being the war doctor would have made much sense anyway, he was too tormented, but who knows.

See the shoe horning here is between 8 and 9, without Hurt it would have just been 8 pulling the trigger and then regenerating into Eccleston. But then we'd probably not have go a farewell moment for 8 and I'm glad that we had that.

I also heard that there was some talk along the lines of "Well in a perfect world Bill would have been interacting with his two younger (though technically older) selves, but obviously that couldn't happen so with Hurt we can have that Older man dynamic still".

I agree on Clara not having a big enough role, considering her being scattered through time it seemed like she should have had a bigger part.

Bad Wolf Rose playing the weapon made perfect sense to me, that's what they both are.  And thought Billie Piper did a great job, playing a different version of Rose.

So, any ideas on how this can fit in with what happened in The End Of Time?

No need for spoiler tags in this particular thread. :)

Carole Ann Ford should have been the Moment instead of Piper, dammit.

That would have been nice, sadly, it wouldn't have played to many of the audience.

I don't see how that would have worked, now a lookalike for young Susan would have been interesting, possibly the actress that played her in An Adventure in Space and Time.  It certainly would have given the "how many children" question more impact.

I know, and that's exactly why I personally disliked Billie Piper's role in the special so much. With Piper in the role instead of a veteran actor from the very first episode of the show, DAY OF THE DOCTOR becomes the 8th anniversary of the new series as opposed to the 50th anniversary of the entire run. (Is Piper really that popular in the UK? If so, could someone from Great Britain explain her popularity to me?)

Even worse, the amorphous character of the Moment could have allowed not just Susan to cameo, but all of the more well-known companions from the Doctor's past: Jamie McCrimmon, Romana, Ace, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Moffat had this planned originally, but the powers-that-be demanded Piper's participation.
