And the #1 consultant for the book...

Dr. Peter Venkman

– On the subject of being afraid of no ghosts and backing off on scientists

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Peter is one of three doctors of parapsychology on the Ghostbusters team. He holds PhDs in both parapsychology and psychology. Originally his professional interests were focused on paranormal phenomena like ESP; he appeared not to believe in ghosts until he actually saw one. In the movies, he is characterized by his flippant persona, his approach to his profession as a scientific charlatan, and his womanizing demeanor. Fred Pfeil sees in him a postmodern hero, whose level of "crass self-interest" safeguards him from being ensnared by a stereotypical role.

Despite Venkman's lackadaisical attitude, from time to time he has created inventions that help the Ghostbusters save the day, and he is shrewd and more street-smart than either Ray Stantz or Egon Spengler. Venkman serves as the front man for the group and possesses more social ability than the more academically inclined Ray and Egon. For instance, he is the one who is able to persuade the city mayor to release them after being arrested, return their equipment and otherwise support their attempt to stop Gozer.

That'll be it for tonight, BTW.  I'll do write ups tonight so that I'll be ahead of schedule starting tomorrow.

Until then...

Mickey Mouse of Ajax Ghost Extermination
– On the subject of early 20th century ghost extermination

Mickey generally appears alongside his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, his friends Donald Duck, and Goofy, and his nemesis Pete, among others (see Mickey Mouse universe). Originally characterized as a mischievous antihero, Mickey's increasing popularity led to his being rebranded as an everyman, usually seen as a flawed, but adventurous hero.

He was also a ghost exterminator for a while.
Ah, the fond memories of watching that over and over again, forwards AND backwards.

Number 50
The Subway Ghost
(21 points on 2 of 12 lists. Top Vote #8  Cole Stratton)

The Subway Ghost is a nameless ghost who lives in the New York subway.  Unlike many ghosts, he has learned to affect physical objects and teaches the ghost Sam Wheat to do the same.  He spends most of the time riding the subways and is very territorial.  He's not interested in attacking most people, but if another ghost were to enter his territory, he would become extremely aggressive.
Malevolence
4/10
Though he is not a malevolent ghost, he is very aggressive and irritable.
Spookiness
6/10
He is rather scary due to his... unusual look combined with his anger.

Yeah, I'm confused by that. Is that a real life ghost legend, or a movie one?

Number 49
Jacob Marley
(21 points on 3 of 12 lists. Top Vote #18  Cole Stratton)

In life, Marley was the business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge. As teenagers, both men had been apprenticed in business and met as clerks in another business. The firm of Scrooge and Marley was a nineteenth-century financial institution, probably a counting house, as Marley refers to their offices as 'our money-changing hole'. They have become successful bankers, with seats on the London Stock Exchange. He was named after Marley Tunnel in Devon, just outside Totnes because of fond holiday memories of the town.

In A Christmas Carol, Marley is said to have died seven years earlier on Christmas Eve (as the setting is Christmas Eve 1843, this would have made the date of his passing December 24, 1836). It would be his ghost who would be Scrooge's first visitor (before the three other spirits to come).

Marley preys upon Scrooge's mind in many different ways. The ghost maintains the same voice, hairstyle and sense of dress that he had in life, but is translucent. He wears a handkerchief tied about his jaws, and "captive, bound and double-ironed" with chains which are described as "long, and wound about him like a tail; it was made... of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel." He often, in moments of great despair or impatience at Scrooge's scepticism, flings these upon the ground before him and almost induces his former partner "into a swoon". He explains that it is the chain he unknowingly forged himself in life, as a result of his extortionate behaviour. The ghost is also described as having "an infernal atmosphere of its own... its hair and skirts, and tassels, were still agitated as by the hot vapour from an oven". He despairs at his inability ever to find happiness in the mortal world or the next. As he spent his life on this earth obsessing over money and mistreating the poor and wretched to fill his pocket, Marley is condemned as part of his "penance" to walk the earth for eternity never to find rest or peace, experiencing an "incessant torture of remorse."

When the spectre asks, "Why do you doubt your senses?" Scrooge scoffs that "...a little thing affects them. A slight disorder of the stomach makes them cheat. You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!" Later, more pointedly he says, "Humbug, I tell you! Humbug!" Marley's only reply is a spine-chilling howl that brings Scrooge to his knees, begging for mercy.

Malevolence
2/10
In life he was evil, but in death he learned to be good.  He does want to scare his best friend, but only to scare him straight.

Spookiness
6/10
His scariness doesn't come from his visage in and of itself, but more the overwhelming suffering that he doomed himself too.

Number 48a
Dennis Pearson
(22 points on 1 of 12 lists. Top Vote #4  Cole Stratton)

Dennis Pearson was a ghost that haunted Cordelia Chase's apartment in Los Angeles.

Cordelia moved into an apartment where Dennis and his mother, Maude Pearson, once resided. The Angel Investigations team discovered that the apartment was haunted by Dennis' mother Maude.

After some investigation, the gang discovered that Maude Pearson had died of what was believed to be a heart attack on the same day that her son had disappeared. The group came to the conclusion that Dennis had killed his mother in order to be with a woman she didn't approve of. However, after being haunted by the ghost of Maude, Cordelia broke down a wall in her house, revealing the still tied-up body of Dennis Pearson. The team deduced Maude had tied her son up when she learned that he was leaving her to be with his girlfriend, subsequently building a brick wall and trapping him inside, where he suffocated to death. When Cordelia broke down the wall, it unleashed the spirit of Dennis, who destroyed his mother's ghost. Because the ghost of Dennis still inhabited the apartment, and Cordelia refused to move out, Dennis then resided with Cordelia as an invisible, and rather benevolent, roommate. He even prepared a surprise birthday party for her.

At one point, Cordelia stated that the best romantic action she could get at the time was "an invisible ghost who's good with the loofah", hinting at a deeper relationship than just roommates.

Their "living" situation continued until Cordelia ascended to be a higher being. Dennis was not heard from again after "confronting" the gang about taking Cordelia's possessions out of the apartment. He presumably still haunts the apartment.

Dennis usually remained invisible and, unlike his mother, didn't possess a visible human form. However, when he did manifest physically, he took the form of a ghostly face surrounded by tendrils of light.

 Malevolence
2/10
The only really aggressive act he committed was exorcising his evil mother from the apartment.

Spookiness
2/10
Mostly he is not scary, but he did take the form of a spooky skull thing that one time.  But it was a pretty bad effect so... 2.

Number 48b
Elisa Cameron
(22 points on 1 of 12 lists. Top Vote #4 George Harrison)

The Ghost we know today was born Elisa Deerlane. When she was between four years old her birth father Dan Deerlane was killed by Earl Cameron in an altercation. Earl married Elisa's mother June Deerlane and adopted her and her sister Margo Deerlane changing their last names to Cameron. Elisa and Margo repressed their memories of their father's murder and believed the alcoholic Earl Cameron was their birth father.

As a child Elisa found had the power to enter a new dimension and had a friend Nemo whom she played with. Nemo turned out to be Elisa's personal deamon but while Elisa was little Nemo was her "imaginary" friend. Elisa did everything she could to keep her secret from everyone including her family.

When Elisa went to college her powers were discovered by an all female task force group known as the Furies. She joined them and they trained her in the way of espionage and armed/unarmed combat. This upset Nemo and he turned the dimension  that was once a place of dreams to a place of nightmares. She became so terrified about the dimension that fellow Furies used their powers to make her forget she even had the power.

Elisa lost memories and had her brain twisted erased and changed by various enemies and "allies". She disappeared for weeks and was only left with the fragmentation of memories and suggestions when she was found again by the Furies who reformed her mind with more false memories and convinced her she was a real ghost.

 Malevolence
6/10
Though she is a "good guy", she isn't afraid to kill her enemies.

Spookiness
2/10
She's not particularly spooky, but she does wield guns, which makes her a bit scarier, I guess.

The Overlook Hotel
(22 points on 1 of 12 lists. Top Vote #4 Johnny Unusual)

The Overlook Hotel was a secluded hotel located in the Rocky Mountains. During its history it was the site of many unsavory activities, including suicides, gangland hits, and many suspicious changes of ownership, yet the hotel remained a luxurious destination known for its sumptuous grounds and spectacular mountain view.

The Overlook was destroyed when the hotel's winter caretaker, Jack Torrance, allowed the outmoded boiler to go untended until it exploded, burning the Overlook to the ground. Jack's wife Wendy and his son Danny Torrance, along with hotel cook Dick Halloran, were the only survivors of the destruction.

Years later, Andrew Pomeroy, an amateur painter, was employed by a magazine to sketch the ruins of the hotel. Pomeroy disappeared during the assignment.

 Spookiness
10/10
Usually, you will find the spookiness meter is based on first impressions.  In some cases, a ghost may have a higher rating than expected due to the fact of how startling and unnerving they are on first blush.  Haunted locations, however, are marked the opposite way.  You need to spend time with a location understand how spooky it is.  This one is possibly the spookiest haunted house of all time.

Tomás Escobeda
(22 points on 1 of 12 lists. Top Vote #4 ScottotD)

In life, Tomás was a deformed boy who hid his face under a burlap mask.  Growing up in an orphanage in Spain with his mother Benigna, Tomás one day had his mask stolen by the other children and, humiliated, hid in a sea cave near the orphanage, only to drown after the tide had risen. In revenge, Benigna murders all of the children in the orphanage.

Years later, all of the children began haunting the orphanage.  After a family moved in with the intent of making the orphanage into a home for disabled children, Tomás made friends with the family's son Simón.  Most thought that he was merely Simón's imaginary friend, but after Tomás revealed that Simón was not his mother's biological son and Simón would die soon.

Currently, Tomás is still haunting the orphanage with his friends, as well as a new friend and a new caretaker...

Spookiness

He was spooky when he was alive.  Burlap masks will do that for ya.
