Oh yes in all but one of those I still like the original better (sorry Mr. Carter, you're successful but sort of pants) but I love all of the covers almost as much.
People are not articles of clothing!
Jay-Z is, big floppy old-man pants.

Bill Withers however, is the tits.

Ones I liked from Raven's list.

15. "I'm your Boogie Man "White Zombie covers KC and the Sunshine Band
ORIGINAL   COVER

17. "Sweet Dreams" Marilyn Manson covers the Eurithmics
ORIGINAL   COVER

18. "I will Survive" Cake covers Diana Ross
ORIGINAL   COVER

19. "Enter Sandman" Richard Cheese covers Metallica
ORIGINAL   COVER

Oddly, all consecutive.  My favourite thing about the Enter Sandman cover is how it uses the sound of "Mr Sandman"  Brilliant

Okay so, links and comments:
3   How Do - Sneaker Pimps (covering Magnet’s Willow’s Song) : Original ~ Cover
I simply love Kelli’s voice, she has a ton of solo stuff too that is well worth checking out.

4   The Highwayman - Jimmy Webb (covering Glen Campbell but which he wrote): Original ~ Cover
I love both versions but like I said earlier I like the more rueful take Webb brings to it, it’s like he was grateful to be free of the burden of being a brigand and being able to move on to more useful lives. When I eventually pop off I think this is getting played at the immolation ceremony. :)

12   Who is he and what is he to you -  Me‘Shell Ndegéocello (covering Bill Withers): Original ~ Cover
Not especially different musically (though she does play an awesome bass) but the fact that it’s still being sung to a woman by a woman alters the meaning and implication of the song in interesting ways. Me‘Shell also has a ton of great stuff that you should check out if this is your first exposure to her, God, Shiva, for example. There is another cover of this song that I almost included which is the origin of the sample L.L. Cool J uses for Phenomenon but I left it off in the final cut.

17   99 Problems - Hugo (covering Jay-Z): Original ~ Cover
Now see I loved the remake of Fright Night (wish they’d made a couple more really) including this song, I don’t know it’s a more entertaining version of the song really. I didn’t mind Jay-Z back in the 90s but I just stopped enjoying listening to him a while back (the same isn’t true for DMX though, still love those albums).

19   Get The Party Started - Shirley Bassey (covering P!nk): Original ~ Cover
Might be a british thing, just tons of fun, Dame Shirley’s such a game old bird. Also, has Maye Rudolph ever played her?

20   I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone (covering Screamin’ Jay Hawkins): Original ~ Cover
I love Nina, this version isn’t as loopy as the original but still manages to be intense despite the pace, she was a force of nature, she really was (mind you, so was Jay).

7   Poker Face -   Eric Cartman   - Lady Gaga
8   Superman -   REM   - The Clique
9   Singing in the Rain-    Gene Kelly- "The Hollywood Revue of 1929"
17   Head Like a Hole -   Devo -NIN

Some good stuff.  Head like a hole is good, but I forgot how great the Eric Cartman Poker-Face was.

Hadn't heard her version.  Really cool.  I think I'll be downloading that one for my wife.

Here's what I liked from Starman's list.
9. Blue Velvet - Lana Del Rey (Originally by Bobby Vinton)
22. Because the Night - Bruce Springsteen (Originally by Patti Smith)

That Blue Velvet cover is pretty great.  Very beautiful.

Here's What I liked from Tejava's list

Quote
12 Time is on My Side    Rolling Stones  Irma thomas
16 Green Manalishi    Judas Priest    Fleetwood Mac
17 Daydream Believer    Shonen Knife  Beatles
19 Youre no Good    Linda Rondstadt    Billy Everett
20 Summertime Blues    Brian Setzer  Eddie Chochrane

Never heard Green Manalishi before.  Very nice.

From Pak Man

5. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Nicki French - Bonnie Tyler
16. This is Halloween - Marilyn Manson - Danny Elfman
I don't have much to say except that's a pretty good Bonnie Tyler cover.

From Anais
12) Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon – Urge Overkill (Original by Neil Diamond)
20) Mother’s Little Helper – Liz Phair (Original by The Rolling Stones)
21) Everyday is like Sunday – 10,000 Maniacs (Original by The Smiths)
22) One – Johnny Cash (Original by U2)
I have the Johnny Cash one, but it didn't make my list.  Those American recordings had an insane amount of great covers!  I like #12 a lot too, but, and maybe I don't know any better, it's a little too close to the original.  Still great though.

From Sic Girl
Quote
3   Billie Jean- Chris Cornell (Michael Jackson)
10   Love on the Rocks- Jonathan Davis (Neil Diamond)
18   She's not there- Neko Case and Nick Cave (Zombies)

Extra points for Billie Jean since I was recently at a Michael Jackson themed Cirque du Soleil.

From Mrs Dick Courier
Quote
5. Hazy Shade of winter-Simon and Garfunkel/Bangles
13. I can help-Billy Swan/Elvis
15. Take me to the River-Al Green/Talking Heads
16. Down with the sickness-Disturbed/Richard Cheese
18. Jolene-Dolly Parton/Jack White
24. Crimson and Clover-Tommy James/Joan Jett
Good stuff here.  I'm not all that familiar with the Hazy Shade of Winter, so it was nice to hear both versions.

From Cole's list

3.   Tonight You Belong To Me – Josh Ritter and Blake Hazard (Steve Martin & Bernadette Peters)
http://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=Josh+Ritter+Tonight+You+Belong+to+Me+(with+Blake+Hazard)
10.   Eye in the Sky – Jonatha Brooke (The Alan Parsons Project)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNB068IVWVI
18.   The Killing Moon – Pavement (Echo & The Bunnymen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ2vj3RSCio
19.   Wonderwall – Paul Anka (Oasis)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMtGJczyZdw
Really like the Tonight You Belong to Me.  I've always liked that song.  Paul Anka Wonderwall is pretty great too.\

FINALLY, Monty

13. Annie Lennox - "No More "I Love You's"" (originally by The Lover Speaks)
18. Boy George - "The Crying Game" (originally by Dave Berry)
21. After The Fire - "Der Kommissar" (originally by Falco)

I knew there was an English and German version of Der Kommissar but I thought they were by the same guy.  Neat.

Anyway, finished that up.  Nice to hear everyone's styles!  Good work everyone, especially SicGirl, of course.

Opinions Vary.

Also, you didn't know the name of the song? Do you normally only hear the instrumental version?
