« on: June 09, 2013, 06:23:19 PM »

Quote
The first teaser poster for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now online and it shows off Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins at the entrance to the Lonely Mountain, the cave where the villainous Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) guards his Dwarven treasure. Check it out below and come back Tuesday, June 11 at 10am PT / 1pm ET for the film's first trailer!

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece "The Hobbit," by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Eh, I will see this movie, because I am a sucker for dragons. But after the bloated nonsense of the first one my expectations are seriously lowered.

EDIT: Also, am I the only one that thought the CGI on Smaug looked really bad in the scene at the end of the last one?

What's Legoals doing in the Hobbit?  I know there are complaints directed at the lack of women in The Hobbit, but I think writing her into the story is going too far.

I'm going to watch it and enjoy it by forgetting everything I know about The Hobbit. The first movie had Bilbo as a secondary character and the trailer shows the trend will continue. Also wish that they tried to make the story stand on its own without shoe-horning everything from the LoTR trilogy into this series. Legolas isn't too much of a stretch, but I get the feeling that he's practically the star of this next film over Bilbo, and that already annoys along with many other things in the trailer. Basically, Bilbo is slightly more important that the other 12 dwarves, but much less important than anyone from the original trilogy and Thorin.

I don't know, but more impoortantly, why did they seemingly give him A LOVE STORY?! Of all the things these films did NOT need is some goddamn shoehorned in romance!

And why is she the only one in this entire series who doesn't look like she belongs in Middle Earth?

I look forward to this. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is a really good film. I was a bit floored by the idea they were splitting the story into three films, but considering the extended LORD OF THE RINGS versions are like six or seven movies worth of footage, I won't mind that much.

To be fair, even though they didn't now Legolas yet, I believe he would have been in Mirkwood at the same time as Bilbo and the dwarves in the book, so out of all the characters from the earlier films, his token shoehorned cameo makes the most sense.

She is a character created for the films and appears nowhere in the books.

I just meant in her look. I can't really explain it, but she just really stuck out and looked more modern for some reason.
