Tim Burton to direct Depp as DR. PHIBES
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:06:21 PM »
Quote
Johnny Depp is set to play the lead role in a remake of the 1971 Horror Classic “The Abominable Dr. Phibes.”

The original film starred Vincent Price as a man bent on revenge against the team of Doctors whom Phibes blames for the death of his wife. Following the Ten Plagues that befell Egypt as the model for the murders, Dr. Phibes is a cult classic film and considered one of Vincent Price’s most signature roles.

Director Tim Burton, a longtime fan of Vincent Price and the Phibes films, is on board to direct the updated version of the movie which is at its heart, a gothic love story.

Depp has stated before his genuine affection for the original film and its lead character Dr. Anton Phibes. Director Burton, whose first film was “Vincent” a tribute to Vincent Price, says that “Dr. Phibes was a childhood favorite of mine, a mix of pathos, horror and dark humor.”

Burton even attended the Film’s Los Angeles premiere in 1971 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre as a 12 year old boy. Everything comes full circle!

Uggghhh....I love Burton and Depp but I don't know about this.  And I guess Helena Bonham Carter will be in it too.

Vincent Price owns this role.  And some things should be left alone.

Hopefully they learned from their TERRIBLE Dark Shadows bomb to avoid that kind of crap.

Well if they didn't learn from Alice In Wonderland. And while Alice was a big moneymaker, Dark Shadows did apparently make it's money back when you include foreign markets.
It's sad that this looks like more dreck from Burton after the wonderful Frankenweenie made it seem like he was getting some of his mojo back.

Nice to see both of them taking chances and doing something outside their comfort zone.

I just don't know about this.  On one hand, with how much love Burton has for all things Vincent Price, you have to believe he's going to want this to be his best possible work.  On the other hand, he seemed to have love for Dark Shadows too, so I don't know how this is going to turn out.

FINALLY, Depp and Burton reteam. Man, it's been, what, a decade since their last movie together?

Who in the world would back this after Dark Shadows tanked (or at best, broke even)?

The only 'reputable' website I can find with info on this over the last year was HuffPo, and that was at the Dark Shadows premiere. I gotta think that the project went by the wayside after the second week of Shadows' run.

Or, put another way, what this guy talks about here. (Emphasis mine.)

Quote
First off, the story doesn't mention a studio connected to the project, a screenwriter or proposed start date.  Sure, both the director and his favorite star like the film, but that doesn't mean the pair are planning to remake the source material.  Or that any studio has signed on to produce/fund/distribute the proposed film.

And, as for studio involvement, let's look at the two principles "involved" in the update.  First, Burton has taken a beating at the box office last year.  Both Dark Shadows (with Johnny Depp) and Frankenweenie underperformed at the box office, and given the cost of most Burton films, it might make most executives leery of giving the director a load of cash for a potentially expensive remake of a rather obscure horror film.

Then we have Johnny Depp, who most consider box office gold.  Unless you consider the weak performance of Dark Shadows, and that  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides wasn't the cash cow everyone expected. (Domestically, that is - overseas it made a killing and Disney announced directors for POTC5 yesterday - KF)

And we have the potential fiasco that is The Lone Ranger.  Sure, Depp is not the main character, but no one is going to this film because Armie Hammer is in title role.  Given Depp's influence on Tonto's appearance (must resist a put-a-bird-on-it joke) and how the trailers are playing up the Pirates of the Caribbean connection, if this film tanks, most studios might consider another big budget Depp film too much of a risk.  And we haven't even discussed Disney trimming back the budget of this summer "blockbuster," despite Depp's drawing power.

In short, it's too soon to tell if this proposed remake will come to fruition.  The story fails to take into account too many factors, such as box office performance of upcoming and previous films, and the willingness of a studio to roll the dice on a big budget film based on a rather obscure horror film.  I am including a link to the original story, but don't bother clicking on it.  You'll be wasting your time and energy on a story that seems more intent on cashing in on Price's birthday than one with any real information.

Man, I guess I shouldn't be surprised?

So now we get to see depp in a different shade of eyeliner and I'm assuming gold lame Colleen Atwood mumu (moomoo sp?) employing a bunch of ways to kill people... End credits

I thought button was interested in developing a movie from the manga "Mai the Psychic Girl", why not do that instead of the same old same old?

I'd be much more interested if he did something *gasp* original! Or at least a sequel to Frankenweenie. It made enough money, you'd think the studios would want it.

I'm sure at this point neither Burton or Depp give a crap. If a movie they made makes money, as far as they're concerned there's nothing to learn. The same applies for the rest of Hollywood.
