And this is what I find interesting about the character/phenomenon really; how it taps into already existing triggers.

Victor Surge has said he based the idea of Slenderman on this character in the movie, Phantasm, only named the Tall Man:

So he was tapping into an already definable character, which was already based on other characters and real people throughout the ages. I've never seen Phantasm, but from what I understand the Tall Man was a mortician. Which comes right around to what you said, Im, about frightening characters being based on people with authoritarian (or just creepy) occupations.

And there's also this guy:

Who scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

Yep, that's exactly who I had in mind when I mentioned ministers. :)

Wow. Well, this is impressive. Variety reports that Marble Hornets is getting its own movie. No wonder the guys haven't had all that much time to put into the series.

I'd copy and paste the article here but I'm on my tablet and can't do the select thingy.

That moment going from raving madman to totally under control gives me goosebumps.

Actor Julian Beck.  I remember reading about him off and on in the Village Voice and thought it had been a stroke of genius to cast him in the role of the evil preacher.  He was dying of cancer during the filming I understand.
And I'm worse than Hitler.
