Who likes power-pop??  I do! My friend Richie Parsons is a Boston punk luminary and he is kickstarting his first solo record.  It is going to be produced and mixed by Ken Stringfellow (Posies, REM). After 2 days he is 29% funded!! For $50 you get vinyl/digital/autograph/t-shirt!!

Heck yeah! Richie is a super rad dude!  Plus Ken produced Damien Jurado's Rehearsals for Departure which I absolutely love.

First day and we're almost at 20% funded already! As a friend of mine put it:

"If your interests fall in the center of this diagram, support the comic Catbeard the Pirate. http://kck.st/1hcsf5b" (Personally, I'm fine with the support even if I only hit one or two!)

Oh, and help fund a sci-fi film secretly shot in China starring political dissident artist Ai Weiwei and shot by the cinematographer of "Hero" and "In the Mood for Love".

So, you probably know that I'm the Board Chair for Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company, and if you don't know that, I'm the Board Chair for Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company. The mission and the work of MGT is very important to me.

Right now we have a campaign going on to raise money for one of our key programs - Shakespeare in Prison,

Shakespeare in Prison is a program facilitated by Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It empowers inmates through theatre exercises and Shakespearean text to think creatively, re-examine decisions they've made, become more in touch with their emotions, and develop crucial skills which will be useful for life both in and out of prison.

I attended one of the performances at the end of the last session and I posted to the blog afterwards saying: "...the thing that struck me most was not the performance per se but rather the sense of happiness and achievement that emanated from all the participants. It could be seen in the slight self-deprecation from Prospero as her friends praised her performance, in the reaction and conversation between Trinculo and members of the audience before and after the performance, in the keenness of the cast to set up and get things going prior to our arrival. It would not be surprising to discover that happiness isn't in surplus abundance for the participants in the program, but their involvement in it provides that and, moreover, seems to provide a sense of palpable accomplishment. This, beyond all else, is the greatest benefit of the program; it provides growth and success to those who may not have known either to any great degree previously."

If you can give that would be awesome and I would be very grateful but, if you can't, please share this with your networks and friends (feel free to quote me in emails) so that more people learn of the campaign, and of the great work being done in the Shakespeare in Prison program.

Thank you.

For fans of Beat the Geeks, TV Geek Paul Goebel is trying to get the next big thing off the ground: Ubergeek.  In the original Beat the Geeks, some of the material had to be dumbed down for the contestants.  Here, it's going to be a true test of geek knowledge, not just for pop culture, but also science and math.

My theatre company was successful in our campaign, which is great and means the programme is sustainable for the foreseeable future. Woooo. :)
