50c. Andy Serkis

(19 points, 2 lists of 16, highest ranking: #16 CJJones)
Voice Over Credits
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Gollum
The Hobbit Trilogy - Gollum
King Kong – King Kong
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Ceasar

From Wikipedia:
Andrew Clement "Andy" Serkis[1][2] (born 20 April 1964) is an English film actor, director and author.

He is popularly known for playing through performance capture to animate and voice computer-generated characters: Gollum in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and its upcoming Hobbit prequels (2012–2014), King Kong in the eponymous 2005 film, Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)[3][4] and Captain Haddock in Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin (2011).

Serkis' most critically acclaimed roles have been Sméagol/Gollum, in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy (2001–03), the title character in the 2005 version of King Kong, in which he provided both the voice and movements for the CGI character as well as the ship's cook, and as 1970s new wave star Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2010).

His work on The Lord of the Rings started a debate on the legitimacy of CGI-assisted acting. Some critics[14] felt Serkis should have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, since his voice, body language, and facial expressions were used. There is the argument that his CGI actions were partially, or in some cases fully, animated without his movements, but the same is true for actors in a traditional movie with CGI (uncredited, Serkis also voices the Witch King of Angmar, as well as several orc characters).

50b. Thurl Ravenscroft

(19 points, 2 lists of 16, highest ranking: # 14 Smoky)
Voice Over Credits
Lady and the Tramp – Al the Alligator, Singing Pound Dogs
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! – Singer of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" (uncredited) (Not exactly Voice Over acting, but like I was going to ignore it!!!!!!!!!!)
The Aristocats – Russian Cat
Childhood Comemrcials - Tony The Tiger

I am pretty sure he did some of the voice work for Disneyland too…Possibly the Haunted Mansion? It’s been a long time since I went to Disneyland.

From Wikipedia:
Thurl Arthur Ravenscroft (February 6, 1914 – May 22, 2005) was an American voice actor and basso profundo best known as the deep voice behind Tony the Tiger's "They're grrreat!" in Frosted Flakes television commercials for more than five decades. Ravenscroft was also known, however uncredited, as the vocalist for the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from the classic Christmas television special, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. His voice acting career began in 1940 and lasted until his death in 2005 at age 91.

I was the other person with Thurl Ravenscroft. I completely forgot he also did "You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch". If I had remembered that I would have put him higher.

Maria is a great voice actress, and it's no surprise that her stand-up career lead to her being a voice actress, since she uses voices in her work.  Despite the wacky voices, she often touches on some sensitive personal demons and her latest comedy special (called the Special Special Special) has her performing in front of an audience of two: her parents.  And no, she doesn't change the material for them.  Let the awkwardness begin.  I really think she could be the next June Foray if she was a full time voice actress (due to her ability to do great witch voices).

Here's some of the actual voice acting:

And here's some of her stand up.

EDIT: Here's some more substantial work, where she plays an alien named Gale and a jealous gauntlet

Oh wow, I forgot that Ravencroft did that song. He would have made my list if I had remembered.

Also, the Top 80s Movies thread can be unstickied, and this thread stickied to stay at the top of the page.

Serkis is very good, but I think of him as more of just an actor since it mixes performance capture and voice acting together.  Still, he was good as Captain Haddock in the recent Tintin movie (which was awesome!).

So, Andy Serkis can be on the list, even though he did at least as much weird stuff physically as a puppeteer. Plus, as someone put it, he sounds like Donald Duck with pneumonia. (Hey, it's the end of the world, last chance to share some bitterness.)

Thanks for the countdown anyway, anais.

Well, I think that's why people were voting for him, but he did voices in Tintin, Flushed Away and Arthur Christmas, so he meets the criteria.

When doing Gollum, sure. I agree, I'd not have had him on the list and so he wasn't on the one I turned in, which is all anyone can do with these lists really. :)

Just finished rewatching Elf (man, I love it, but the climax feels so unearned that it really bugs me) and since I'm in the Christmas mood and You're a Mean One was mentioned, I thought I'd point out this badass song cover.  Not as good as the original, but still awesome!

Would doing 'Favourite Muppets' give you your puppeteer fix? :)
