My take:
You know the phrase "the Devil has the best lines"? This is no more true than here. While this movie is funny from start to end, it's the villain stuff that easily gets the biggest laughs. This is truly one of Rick Moranis' best showcases. The stuff with Lonestar pales in comparison, which is odd because you have the incompareable John Candy (sandly saddled with an unwieldy costume and a not very funny main joke), and Pill Pullman is more than capable here too. Hell, even the normally gratingly annoying Joan Rivers is good here. But see it for the Spaceballs themselves, it's worth it.

What have we learned?
 Rick Moranis is AWESOME!

 Holy crap, Joan Rivers can actually be funny! Ok, sometimes, but still...who knew?!

Remake: Rather than a remake, I'd like to see Mel Brooks make a Spaceballs 0.5 that does a similar spoofing of the prequels.

Tastes may vary?  I don't like ET at all and I'm fairly indifferent to Breakfast Club,  Terminator was one of my last cuts though.

Yeah the '80s were full of so many iconic movies, that even the bottom of my list was all pretty much iconic must-list '80s movies. I have a couple suspicions, but I wouldn't place money on what the number one is going to be for this one. Too many wild cards.

I saw Pee Wee's Big Adventure when I was 6. The Large Marge scene scared the shit out of me. I actually skipped to the next chapter on the DVD (I'm glad we decided to rent the DVD for that one).

I don't think Spaceballs is terribly strong overall, but when it hits the marks... it's really great.... in this case that usually means anything involving Rick Moranis. From the funny factor, it reminds me of a lot of MST3K episodes... where you can go 20 minutes with nothing more than light chuckles, only to be bowled over by a hilarious 90 second run of brilliance.
