The First Contact war lasted like 4 days.  I'm not sure what they could do with that?

An action-shooter.  They've been moving in that direction for a while now.  Throw in a few conversations and you have your follow up.

All I know is I won't be pre-ordering if Casey Hudson is writing the ending.

I've been thinking about this for a while. Ideas that spring to mind:

A game that focuses on the Asari, pre-reaper/Shepard storyline.
A Jack-centric game...I'd imagine it would be like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in space (and with biotics).
The Geth War - gets into some really great sci-fi territory like sentience.

The next Mass Effect game won't necessarily be called Mass Effect 4, as BioWare emphasizes that such a thing would create expectations from fans about continuing the story of Commander Shepard, which ended alongside the main trilogy.

BioWare's Mass Effect franchise has entertained millions of players from all around the world with its great blend of story and gameplay, allowing them to play as Commander Shepard, the only man (or woman) who can stop the menace of the alien Reapers.

After concluding the adventures of Shepard in Mass Effect 3, BioWare quickly confirmed that it's begun working on a brand new Mass Effect experience that won't star Commander Shepard.

In order to keep the expectations of fans in check, BioWare community manager Chris Priestly has posted a statement on the BSN, saying that the Mass Effect 4 name shouldn't be used, as it creates the expectation of continuing the main trilogy.

"To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice and seems to cause a lot of confusion here. We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. That is the only detail you have on the game," he said.

Calling the new game Mass Effect 4 also "makes people think of it more as 'what happens after Mass Effect 3' rather than 'what game happens next set in the Mass Effect Universe', which is far more accurate at this point," according to him.

What's more, Priestly emphasized that work has just begun on the game and that BioWare isn't going to share any details until the time is right.

"I see people saying 'well, they'll have to pick a canon ending'. No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side. Or with characters you know. Or yaddayaddayadda. Wherever, whenever, whoever, etc. will all be revealed years down the road when we actually start talking about it."

As of yet, however, BioWare will keep its cards close to its chest and won't share any other details about the new Mass Effect until it's ready.

I still dont get why people are so pissy about the ending of ME3?

Characters choices rendered inconsequential to the ending; a general lack of closure; lore contradictions; character and narrative inconsistencies; the absence of a final boss battle, and massive plot holes, as well as that the form the endings took directly contradicted statements made by certain BioWare staff made during the game's development as to how they would be presented to the player.

Angry Joe sums it up nicely, I think:

Like I said, if that fuck, Casey Hudson has anything to do with writing this new game, I won't pick it up until it's in the bargain bin.

What massive plot holes are you referring too?  Lack of closure?  Are you pissy because it didn't have a sunshine and rainbows ending where everyone lives happily ever after?

Looking back at the ME3 thing I can only think, "people were rioting about that?"

First off, I'm not being "pissy". I'm saying that if they let the publisher write script again, I'm not buying it.

Secondly, It's a shooter game. How about the lack of a final boss battle? You pick curtain 1, 2, or 3. That's it. And nothing you did in the prior two games mattered despite what they promised otherwise.

Not self-promoting, it's just easier to post a link to what I wrote about the ME3 ending than trying to paraphrase it.

Here is the crux of the issue. Bioware took a series of games that has hinged on player’s decisions and essentially said that none of that matters. If I’m honest, that’s a little insulting. I played these games for many, many hours. I regretted decisions with bad outcomes, but I didn’t go back and change things because to me that felt like cheating. All of those moments where I sat staring at the screen trying to decide the right thing to do…all the times I waited with bated breath to see what consequences my actions had sown…all of that was rendered null by the ending to Mass Effect 3.

It doesn’t mattered if you played paragon or renegade. It doesn’t matter who lived and who died. It doesn’t matter who you supported or who had your back. Everybody got the exact same ending.

This is what bothered me.

The executive producer behind the Mass Effect series has said that the planned fourth entry in the sci-fi space epic will be something completely fresh.

Speaking at PAX East (via Kotaku), Casey Hudson revealed that the team behind the original trilogy are having a break from the series to work on new IP.

“We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game, and it’s going to be a new thing,” said Hudson.

“We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you’ve come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience but start something fresh and new – a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect.”

Mass Effect 4 – whatever that might be –  will be developed by BioWare Montreal, though Hudson himself will remain with the franchise at the home of the original games, namely BioWare Edmonton.

As mentioned previously, the Edmonton branch is working on an all-new project.

“We are developing a whole new fictional universe at BioWare for myself and Preston [and other main Mass Effect trilogy creators.] That’s kind of our next thing,” continued Hudson.

“We’re focusing on building something new the way we did at the very beginning on Mass Effect.”

"New way to explore the universe?"

That sounds like a multi-player focused shooter to me.   :)

I'm thinking Mass Effect, but with Puzzle Quest mechanics for combat.

Oh! And Pet collecting too!
