Joss Whedon's new Marvel TV show for ABC will be 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

You can stop frantically guessing about what the super duo of Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios have up their sleeve for us next: ABC has just ordered the pilot for Joss Whedon's new Marvel TV show, "S.H.I.E.L.D."

"S.H.I.E.L.D." represents the first live-action Marvel TV show pilot to get the green light. According to Deadline Hollywood, Whedon will write "S.H.I.E.L.D." with his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, who collaborated with Whedon on "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" and "Dollhouse." Production on the pilot will begin immediately, with the Whedons, Jeffrey Bell, and Jeph Loeb executive producing.

"S.H.I.E.L.D." of course refers to the extra-governmental agency led by Nick Fury that brought together Earth's mightiest heroes in "The Avengers." S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for "Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate" or "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division," according to Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson, and the organization exists both in the Marvel cinematic universe as well as in its own Marvel comic books series.

Ever since it was announced that Joss Whedon had signed a three-year contract with Marvel Studios to not only write and direct "The Avengers" sequel, but also to develop a live-action TV show set in the Marvel cinematic universe, fans have been buzzing about what that TV show might be. Our personal favorite theories were a show based on "The Runaways" or a Black Widow and Hawkeye series.

There is no word yet on when "S.H.I.E.L.D." will premiere, nor which Marvel Comics characters will be featured in the series.

What'd'ya say: ...'older' episodes with Coulson?  ...current incidents including Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders)?  [Unlikely to get Johansson Black Widow or Renner Hawkeye though... and no way in hell could I see Jackson's Fury be on TV (unless a 'flashback' episode, in which he's just starting with the organization, and played by a different actor... and yes, I realize in the comics he started as Sgt. Fury in WWII, but it is likely 'Movie Marvel' will ignore that bit of history ).]

I do hope we get a few cameos.  Wouldn't be surprised to see Jackson show up for the premiere or a special two parter here and there.

I think they'd certainly want to keep as much continuity with the movies as possible, so I could see them getting Downey and co to appear every now and again.

Hopefully it doesn't turn into CSI: Marvel.  They are probably not going to use any super heros because they will want to save them for big name stars.  I can see this turning boring pretty fast.

I could see them using B and C list superheroes and villains. Ones that wouldn't show up in the movies.

More news on it already.     We can stop speculating on at least a couple things, though this really doesn't answer a whole lotta' questions.

Joss Whedon explains the premise of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series

After yesterday's big announcement that Marvel's new live-action TV series with Joss Whedon and ABC would be "S.H.I.E.L.D." Whedon has explained a few details of the show's premise.

Variety has reported that during a Q&A Whedon moderated on Tuesday for Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass's new movie "Sleepwalk with Me", Whedon described how "S.H.I.E.L.D." would function in the Marvel cinematic universe. Variety reports:

     "The storyline for the proposed series will be largely 'autonomous' from the Avengers sequel feature. The series will revolve around the activities of the SHIELD org governing body for the superheroes featured in 'The Avengers.'"

Variety writer Cynthia Littleton tweeted yesterday that "altho Joss reserves right to pepper in bits here and there. His bro Jed and Maurissa T. will be showrunners, he'll just show up every now and then 'and take credit for everything,' Joss assures."

I don't think it'd be Cobie Smulders, as she's tied to How I Met Your Mother for the next 50 years.

Yeah, I know she's on HIMYM, but I thought she would have summers off [i.e. how she did The Avengers].  Whedon usually works a year in advance: he could film her parts of a story during 'off-season time', then insert it when the season is in production.  Plus it is always possible for actors to get breaks from series (depending on those running them) for a few weeks, where she could have guest shots.

I just think a SHIELD show without Fury, Coulson, or Agent Hill would seem a bit too 'off'.  Those having seen The Avengers film know what's up with Coulson [if anyone mentions it: spoiler it, because there are people who haven't seen it yet].  And Sam Jackson is highly unlikely to be remotely regular on a TV series (if he shows up at all except in possible flashback to 'just starting' [i.e. played by another actor]).

Yeah... and Whedon does LOTS of flashback stuff in his series, so not out of the question.

Oooh!  Bruce Campbell as an aging original Human Torch (the synthetic one in the tube at the NY World's Fair seen briefly in Cap Am)!     That'd be great.
