I guess they didn't need to drop any kind of calibration target down to test on, but if they did, it would have been hilarious to make it in the shape of a tiny stop sign...

The latest HiRISE color image of MSL shows new details.

Subimage 1 shows the rover and its tracks after a few short drives. Tracking the tracks over time will provide information on how the surface changes over time as dust is deposited and eroded.

Subimage 2 shows the parachute and backshell, now in color. The outer band of the parachute has a reddish color.

Subimage 3 shows the descent stage crash site, now in color, and several distant spots (blue in enhanced color) downrange that are probably the result of distant secondary impacts that disturbed the surface dust. (See also this observation for more detail about the sky crane impact.)

Just found out about the SAM instrument package, been trying to find detailed papers on it but looks like haven't put them on the web yet.  Hard to believe they crammed a 6 column GC-MS with all the sample prep equipment into something the size of a microwave oven.  The one in our lab is half the size of the rover....  Been trying to find out how many samples they can do, it would be limited by the amount of helium they have on board for the GC part.  I would guess they would be running fairly small diameter capillary columns so would only need about milliliter a minute of He, so a small high pressure cylinder would last a while.

Wasn't there talk a while ago about these pictures being color corrected from cameras that don' take pictures of the spectrums we see with?

Yup, but they have gotten pretty good at correcting the colors back here on earth.  The other thing I don't think I mentioned in that previous discussion is that they usually put color targets on top of the rovers, take pictures of them and then they know how to do the corrections to replicate the real colors.  Not sure they did that with this mission because the landing kicked up so much dust the color targets would have been contaminated right away.

As for how earth-like it looks, that should be no surprise, we have been landing cameras on Mars for a long time.  Look at some of the images from previous missions and you would think they were taken out in the red-rock desserts in AZ or UT.
